In accordance with one aspect of the invention, a combination valve includes a valve body (12) with a substantially cylindrical portion (14) defining a flow path, a resilient umbrella valve portion (26) extending annularly from the valve body and an inverted bi-directional valve portion provided in the flow path. The inverted bi-directional valve portion includes an interior surface, an exterior surface and at least one normally closed slit (24) extending therebetween, wherein the exterior surface of the inverted bi-directional valve portion includes a generally concave curved portion when the slit is closed.

The housing (214) includes an annular flange (229) having a locking edge (231) which frictionally engages the male luer when inserted through a slit (236) in the diaphragm, to lock the luer in position. A pair of reinforcing ribs (244, 246) are formed integrally with the diaphragm and extend radially inwardly toward each other from the tubular body wall to bias the slit closed. The ribs are reduced in thickness intermediate their ends to form hinge points to facilitate flexing of the diaphragm when the luer is inserted.

A miniature valve (10) is provided for use in a medical administration set wherein the valve is designed to be fit into very small areas while operating with performance characteristics comparable to those provided by larger valves. The valve is formed as a duckbill valve having very thin substantially planar lips (18, 20) extending in converging relationship to each other. A slit (38) is defined by the lips at an outlet end of the valve wherein the slit (38) is movable to an open position as the lips pivot about a pivot point (52, 54) located on the lips in spaced relation to the outlet end. A support structure in the form of a sleeve (40) is provided for ensuring that the contact surfaces remain in alignment with each other during operation of the valve and to prevent the thin, delicate lips (18, 20) from inverting when a large back pressure force is applied and for improving the inherent sealing characteristics of duckbill valves. In addition, a thin area (61) is provided adjacent to the inlet end (22) of the valve for decoupling the lips (18, 20) from forces which are applied to the valve at the inlet end which could tend to bias the lips apart.

The connecting members (26) of the regulator assembly (16) are adapted to flex and allow the disk portion (48) to move off of the rim and thereby allow fluid flow through the valve in the first direction.

The present invention provides a medical coupling site which is adapted to be attached directly to a standard male luer lock fitting. The coupling site includes a valve element contained within a tubular retainer. The retainer is provided with outwardly extending lugs for engaging the threaded locking collar of a male luer lock whereby the male luer lock will be held in positive mechanical locking engagement with the coupling site. The valve element is provided with rib members extending inwardly from an inner wall of the valve element toward a slit formed in a diaphragm such that the rib members act to bias the slit to a closed position.

The present invention provides an anti-whistling duckbill check valve (10) for use in a fluid flow path for permitting relatively free flow of fluid in the path in a first direction from a first to a second end of the valve and for preventing fluid flow in the path in a second opposite direction. The check valve includes first and second lips (32, 34) extending in converging relationship to each other from a base portion (12) of the valve (10). A vibration dampening rib (52, 54) is located on each of the lips (32, 34) wherein the ribs are configured to have a natural frequency substantially equal to that of the lips. The ribs (52, 54) vibrate out of phase with the lips such that the vibration of the lips is dampened.
