A hydraulic breaking hammer (10) has a machine housing (11) in which a percussion motor (15) which includes a reciprocatingly movable percussion piston (17) delivers impacts to a breaking tool (13) in the front of the machine housing (11). The machine housing (11) is carried by a surrounding carrier support (18) via intermediate walls (24, 25, 26). The carrier support has the form of a shell (18) which is attached at the rear adjacent connecting devices (19), to a carrier, such as a hydraulic digging machine which aligns the machine housing (11) while the manner (10) is at work. The machine housing (11) is constructed without joints in its axial direction along the length of the housing and includes a guide passage (21) in which a percussion motor (15) is carried, this percussion motor having the form of an insert cartridge which can be clamped from the rear. The shell (18), the intermediate walls (24, 25, 26) and the machine housing (11) are all combined in a single one-piece metal casting and the space between the shell (18) and the machine housing (11) is filled with a sound-damping material which adheres to the housing (11) and surrounding parts. Hydraulic fluid communication with the percussion motor cartridge (15) is effected through annular grooves (44', 45', 46') provided in the guide passage (21).

Durch Einbau von schallreflektierenden und schallabsorbierenden Vorrichtungen soll ein Geräuschpegel erreicht werden, der Drucklufthämmern mit geschlossener Haltekappe und Schalldämmantel entspricht. Dafür ist eine Buchse (14) aus verschleißfestem und schallabsorbierenden Material entwickelt worden, bei der eine Vielzahl von Durchbrechungen (14a) auf ihrem äußeren Umfang nach innen durchgehend angeordnet sind. Diese Schalldämmbuchsen werden bei Drucklufthämmern zwischen der Haltekappe (2), Halteklinke (3) und dem Werkzeugaufnahmezylinder (5) bzw. bei Bohrhämmern im Bereich des vorderen Zylinders und des Wrekzeughaltebügels befestigt. Das Einsteckwerkzeug (4) bewegt sich innerhalb der sie umhüllenden Schalldämmbuchse (14).

Two exhaust tubes (31, 32) from the chamber (27) are to the greater part situated in the chamber. A number of holes (35, 36) have been drilled near the inlet ends of the tubes. As a result the building up of ice in the inlet is prevented.

A novel design of cylinder is also disclosed wherein the cylinder is formed of a rolled steel tube. There is described also a muffler for use with paving breakers, the muffler being formed by two identical parts.

The air hammer is of the type employing a body hav- ng a first portion (1) with a central bore (20) and a piston 21) reciprocable in the bore (20) by pressurised air under control of an automatic valve (25). The body has a second or muffler portion (7) which embraces the first portion (1) and is operative to muffle the noise created by exhaust air rom the bore (20). The muffler portion (7) is provided with pressurised air passage means (59) through which the pressurised air must pass for causing operation of the piston (21). The passage means (59) are so arranged that removal of the muffler portion (7) from the body (1) dis- upts the supply of pressurised air to the piston (21) and :hereby renders the hammer inoperative. Headers (2, 4) are provided on the ends of the first body portion (1) and are drawn tightly against the ends of this and muffler portion (7) by tie bolts (57, 58) which extend through the passages (59, 60) respectively, in the muffler portion (7). The passages (59, 60) are of larger diameter than the associated bolts (57, 58) and the clearance space between one of the through passages (59) and the associated bolt (57) acts to deliver live air to the piston, to accumulate pressurised air. and to deliver pressurised air for actuating the automatic valve (25).

The backstop 25 is guided in a movable manner with radial play 34 along the working axis 11 on a sliding surface 33. The radial play 34 is at least three times as large as a tolerance of the guidance of the intermediate striker 18 in the plain bearing 21, 22.
