A document guide in a document scanning mode of operation is pivoted into a lowered position generally parallel to the print station platen to constrain and contain the top and bottom of any curled document exiting from the scan station into an output roller nip so as to prevent an incipient paper jam. Prior to a printing mode of operation on a paper sheet, the document guide is pivoted about 100° so that it does not interfere with an incoming print cartridge.

In a scanning unit such as a facsimile machine, an automatic document feeder transports individual sheets from a stack of documents along a document path over a scanning window to an output tray. An upper guide member includes an integrated chassis which provides most of the functional features required for picking individual sheets from a stack of documents in an input tray and transporting the sheet past a scanning window. The various components incorporated in the integrated chassis include a document separation mechanism, pre-scanning pinch rollers, post-scanning pinch rollers, a spring-loaded limiter with minimal paper path obstruction, a hinging mechanism to facilitate manual access to the document path, a latching mechanism, referencing datums, and ESD grounding including ESD brushes adjacent the document path and an ESD shield for a circuit board housed in the upper guide member. In the preferred form, the integrated chassis is formed from an enlarged sheet metal plate which attaches to the underside of a manual control/display panel with the circuit board sandwiched therebetween.

A printer having a writer section for imaging a media web, a cutter (10) for selectively trimming the web from the writer section into imaged sheets and waste, and a transport assembly for advancing cut sheets from the cutter to a finishing mechanism, includes a diverter (16) having a deflecting position for directing web material trimmed from the media web to a first area and a web-advance position for directing imaged sheets to the finishing mechanism. The deflecting position may be a waste-deflecting position for directing waste trimmed from the media web to a waste container (18). Preferably, the diverter has a withdrawn position which clears a path for the formation of a slack loop of media between the printer section and the transport assembly, thereby negating speed-matching and web tracking problems between the printer section and the transport assembly. A transport assembly (20) advances media from a writer section to the finishing mechanism at a rate less than the feed rate of the finishing mechanism. Transport assembly rate is over-ridden to allow media to be drawn through the transport assembly at the feed rate of the finishing mechanism. The finishing mechanism may be a chemical processor or a storage cassette.
