One end of a flexible positioning cord 22 is fixed on one end side of a moulding drum 1 and the positioning cord 22 is then pulled from the other end side thereby applying a tension to the positioning cord 22. The tensed positioning cord 22 presses a joint 12 of an extensible fabric 10 into one of tooth part forming grooves 3 to position it therein. Next, a tension member cord is wound in a spiral form and the tension applied to the positioning cord 22 is then relieved to allow the removal of the positioning cord 22 from the tooth part forming groove 3. Thereafter, an unvulcanized rubber sheet is wrapped around the extensible fabric wound with the tension member cord, and the resultant substance is then subjected to cure through the application of pressure thereby forming a cylindrical slab. The slab is cut into round pieces at specific widths thereby obtaining synchronous belts. In this manner, there is obtained the synchronous belt in which the joint 12 of the extensible fabric 10 is positioned in the tooth part forming groove of the moulding drum so as to avoid movement and is correctly located on a tooth tip end of a tooth part.

The method includes the steps of: forming a sheet-like material (15) into a predetermined shape by the vacuum forming to obtain a preliminary covering portion; trimming an end portion of the preliminary covering portion obtained in the previous step to obtain the covering portion of the formed article (6); setting the covering portion of the formed article on one of a pair of dies (12, 13, 22, 23) which constitute a press-type forming die (11, 21) with the curved portion of the covering portion being supported by a slide core (24) located at a forefront position; setting a molten resin (M) which is forming material of the base portion (27) into a gap between the one die and the other die in a state in which the covering portion of the formed article (6) is being set on the one die; clamping the press-type forming die in a state wherein the slide core (24) is in contact with the other die at the forefront position immediately after or in synchronism with the molten resin setting step and causing the molten resin (M) to set to form it; and opening the forming die and then removing the formed article (6) obtained in the clamping step from the press-type forming die (11, 21).
