The centroid of the halftone spot formed from a single dot or a plurality of adjacent dots is shifted from the center of the dot to an arbitrary position, thus achieving desired screen angles or desired pitches of halftone spots. As a result, screen angles related to an irrational tangent can be realized, and the pitches of halftone spots of a plurality of color screens can also be made uniform.

In acquiring and reproducing an image, my method and apparatus correct for spurious gray background. Image brightness is sensed in multiple regions of an original image, to provide a corresponding multiplicity of signals for use in reproducing the image. In response to the multiple signals, a corresponding multiplicity of corrected signals is provided by adjusting each signal. The amount of adjustment depends on the size of the signal, and preferably includes jitter - i. e. , a random component. Preferably the random component is partially smoothed. The multiple corrected signals are used in reproduction of the image. Preferably the dependence of adjustment on signal size is a multivalued monotonic function. Preferably the function increases the brightness of image regions that are already relatively more bright, in comparison with image regions that are relatively less bright. Preferably the signals represent relative amounts of black, or darkness of a chromatic color; and for each signal a choice is made automatically between the greater of (1) zero and (2) a corresponding one of the multiple signals.

The techniques apply a non-periodic halftone operation (152) to the color separation for a less perceptible color (e.g., yellow) and periodic halftone operations (150, 154, 158) to color separations for more perceptible colorants (e.g. cyan, magenta and black). The techniques prevent the formation of periodic structures due to the interaction of the yellow colorant with one of the other colorants (e.g., cyan or magenta).

A gray balance correction technique eliminates artifacts, caused by the accumulation of diffusion errors, from a predominantly "gray" tonal area of a halftone image. According to the technique, pixel tonal values associated with three input colors are initially examined to detect a condition that specifies production of a gray image area. Upon detecting this condition, errors from previously processed pixels are averaged prior to being "diffused" among these input color pixels. Thereafter, the input pixels are processed in accordance with conventional halftoning operations and the resulting binary pixels values are passed to an output buffer for printing. Averaging of the errors prior to error diffusion ensures that the detected condition is maintained through preprocessing of those input color pixel values.
