An automatic baling machine for forming round bales of crop material and wrapping them with twine is provided with a microprocessor-controlled signal processing circuit (804) for controlling movement of a bidirectional motor (812) which drives a pair of twine tubes. A retract/extend switch (800) is manually operable by an operator to store in the signal processing circuit a sequence of control words which are subsequently executed to control movement of the twine tube drive motor. In addition to being connected to the input of the signal processing system, the retract/extend switch (800) is connected in parallel with the signal processing circuit (808) to actuate the twine tube motor.

A hydraulically driven drive reversing mechanism (30) to reverse the drive to the header and feeder house components (16, 19,...) of a combine harvester (10), is disclosed. The reversing mechanism (30) includes a first gear (42) splined onto the header drive shaft (25) for rotation therewith, a second free wheeling gear (44) mounted in an intermeshing relationship with the first gear (42) for rotation therewith and a clutch (50) selectively engageable with the second gear (44) to transfer rotational power from a hydraulic motor (32) to affect a rotation of the header drive shaft (25). The hydraulic motor (32) is energizable in opposite directions to permit, when the clutch (50) is engaged, a "rocking" of the header and feeder house components (16,19,...) between forward and reverse directions to dislodge a stubborn plugging slug.

An operator's cab (12) such as for a self-propelled crop harvesting machine (10) is disclosed wherein the access door (35) is pivotally mounted on a forwardly inclined support post (26). The hinge axis (40) for the access door (35) is inclined in both a forward direction and in an inward direction toward an operator's station (20) to permit the bottom frame member (38) of the access door (35) to swing in a substantially horizontal plane. The access door (35) is pivotally movable between a closed position and a fully opened position which is approximately 90° of rotation apart. The hinge axis (40) casts a vertical projection relative to the access door (35) when the access door (35) is rotated midway between the closed and fully opened positions so that the bottom frame member (38) can be horizontally positioned in both the closed. and fully opened positions without dropping below a horizontal plane.

A bale shape controlling system (52, 74-92) for round balers (10)is disclosed. The system (52, 74-92) includes first and second indicator lights (80, 82) and a bale shape monitor apparatus (52) for alternately generating signals in the indicator lights (80, 82) in response to predetermined expansion of the bale forming chamber (48) of round balers (10). Typically round balers (10) are operated in a manner whereby crop material is fed mainly into one side of the baling chamber (48) at a given moment. The signals generated in the indicator lights (80, 82) are used by the operator of a round baler (10) as an indication of when to weave the baler (10) to feed crop material mainly into the other side of the baling chamber (48). Proper use of the disclosed system (52, 74-92) prevents the formation of poorly shaped bales while reducing operator fatigue.

A system for tensioning the bale forming apron (50) of a round baler is disclosed. This apron tensioning system includes first and second pairs of drive sprockets (40, 48) for moving the apron (50). The first pair of drive sprockets (40) are driven at a first speed, and the second pair of drive sprockets (48) are driven at a second speed which is slightly slower than the first speed. This differential in sprocket speeds tensions the inner course (50a) of the apron (50) extending between the first and second pairs of drive sprockets (40, 48). The system also includes a slip clutch assembly (84) for temporarily disengaging the second pair of drive sprockets (48) from being driven at the second speed whenever the tension in the inner course (50a) of the apron (50) reaches a preset limit.
