A method and related apparatus for transmitting an asynchronous transport signal over an optical fiber section of an Optical Transport Network is described. Higher order Optical Data Units (20) of an asynchronous transport signal to be transmitted will be encapsulated into outer transport frames (30) that offer a payload rate higher than a nominal bit rate of the asynchronous transport signal. An output optical signal, which contains the outer transport frames (30) with the encapsulated asynchronous transport signal, is generated at a locally generated clock rate (44) and transmitted over an optical fiber section. To encapsulate the asynchronous transport signal, its bit rate is adapted to the payload rate of the outer transport frames (30), which is derived from the locally generated clock (44) through a justification and stuffing process. This eliminates any frame phase or frequency transients occasionally appearing in the received asynchronous transport signal. The rate adapted transport signal is then synchronously mapped into the outer transport frames (30) at the rate of the locally generated clock (44).

Proposed is a bit-interleaver for an optical line terminal of an optical access network. The bit-interleaver contains a memory reader, that provides data streams at bit level to a space-time switch. The space-time switch reads within one input cycle up to N bit sets from the data streams. The switch switches within one writing cycle up to N bits onto up to its output ports, which provide respective output vectors. A number of N OR-function elements determine within the writing cycle respective single output bits. A number of N memory elements write within the one writing cycle a respective one of the output bits into a respective one of their bit sub-elements. A control unit that controls the reading of the data streams and also the switching of the bits by the switch. The control unit controls a choice of the writing addresses.

Proposed is a method of estimating a reflection profile of an optical channel. The method comprises different steps. A measured reflection profile of the optical channel, such as an OTDR trace, is provided. One or more reflection peaks are estimated within the measured reflection profile. A residual reflection profile is determined, by removing the estimated reflection peaks from the measured reflection profile. Furthermore, a modified residual reflection profile is determined, by modifying one or more estimated crosstalk frequency components within the residual reflection profile. Finally, the estimated reflection profile is determined, by superposing the estimated reflection peaks and the modified residual reflection profile.

An optical signal is generated by an SOA and then modulated by an optical amplitude modulation device. The signal is transmitted into a first end of an optical transmission line with a first polarization state. A fraction of the optical signal is re-transmitted into the other end of the transmission line, such that when it has at the other end a polarization state orthogonal to the polarization state of the signal fraction present at the other end. The re-transmitted signal, when having at the first end a polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state, is guided from the first end to the SOA, next to the modulation device and then to the first end without passing the SOA again, using a polarizing beam splitter and a polarization device. The SOA is operated in a gain saturation state, such that an amplitude modulation of the re-transmitted optical signal is cancelled.

Proposed is a method of detecting a transmission fault in an optical network. The method comprises different steps. First measurement data that indicates a first reception level of a first optical signal received at a first optical device is collected. Furthermore, second measurement data that indicates a second reception level of a second optical signal received at a second optical device is collected. The reception levels are monitored by monitoring the measurement data. A transmission fault is detected in the case of an attenuation of one or more of the reception levels. In the case that the transmission fault is detected, a transmission fault type us derived from an attenuation of the reception levels. Then, information indicating the detected transmission fault type is provided.

Proposed is a method of optical data transmission. A first data signal and a second data signal are received at a same sampling rate. A third data signal and a fourth data signal are generated, using the first and the second data signal, wherein the two data signals are delayed to each other by a delay time that is varied over time. The phase of a first optical signal is modulated in dependence on the third data signal, and the phase of a second optical signal with a same wavelength is modulated in dependence on the fourth data signal. The first optical signal is transmitted in a first polarization plane into an optical fibre, and the second optical signal is transmitted in a second polarization plane orthogonal to the first polarization plane into the optical fibre.
