There is provided mechanisms for configuring an antenna system having individual antenna elements arranged in at least two antenna subarrays. Each pair of antenna subarrays has a respective first spatial separation. Each pair of the individual antenna elements has a respective second spatial separation. A method is performed by a network device. The method includes obtaining channel measurements for each of the at least two antenna subarrays. Channel covariance information between the subarrays using the obtained channel measurements is determined. Channel covariance information between all individual antenna elements of the antenna system is determined by interpolating the channel covariance information between the subarrays according to a spatial relation between all first spatial separations and all second spatial separations. Combining of the individual antenna elements of the antenna system is controlled based on the determined channel covariance information between all the individual antenna elements.

Operations by a wireless communication network include obtaining information of available cell resources of cells in at least a segment of the wireless communications network, and the current operation state of each cell in the segment. The operations further include obtaining a current traffic demand in the segment, and obtaining previously stored spatial channel characteristics for wireless devices being associated with the cells in the segment. The spatial channel characteristics for at least one wireless device of the wireless device is given between the at least one wireless device and at least two cells in the segment. A determination is then made whether to affect the operation state of at least one of the cells or not according to the information of available cell resources, the current traffic demand, and the previously stored spatial channel characteristics.

The antenna system 1 comprises a leaky cable 2 arranged to provide coverage in a first type of space, and a distributed antenna system 3 comprising one or more antennas 3 1 , 3 2 , 3 3 , 3 4 and arranged to provide coverage in a second type of space, wherein each of the one or more antennas 3 1 , 3 2 , 3 3 , 3 4 of the distributed antenna system 3 is connected to the leaky cable 2 through a circulator 4 1 , 4 2 , 4 3 , and wherein the MIMO communication is enabled by both ends of the leaky cable 2 being adapted for connection to a respective antenna port 8, 9 of a network node 5 configured for 10 MIMO communication.
