The wettable hydrogel contact lens is characterized by containing an ionic hydrophilic polymer which is a compound having a hydroxy group and an anionic group. The method for producing a hydrogel contact lens is characterized in that a constituent component of the hydrogel contact lens is a copolymer containing at least a cationic monomer and an anionic monomer, and in that the method comprises a step wherein counter ions of the monomers form ionic bonds and a step wherein an ionic hydrophilic polymer, which is a compound having a hydroxy group and an anionic group, is contained.
