Linerless labels are cut or burst from a web (W) by passing the web (W) through infeed and outfeed pairs of rolls (12, 14; 30, 32) with a separator device located therebetween. Each roll pair includes a friction surface for engaging the slick smooth surface (S) of the web and another roll with a silicone elastomeric or plasma-coated surface for engaging substantially without gripping the exposed adhesive side (A) of the linerless label web (W). In the cutting mode, a rotary blade severs (42) the web against a fixed blade (40) to form the label. The infeed rolls (12, 14) are backed up after each cut to break the adhesive bond between the web (W) and the fixed blade (40) and then reverse to advance through the cutting position and into the outfeed rolls (30, 32) for a subsequent cutting operation. The outfeed rolls (30, 32) continue to advance the cut linerless label to a receiving station. In a bursting mode, the web (W) is perforated and a roller breaker bar (80) is disposed between the infeed and outfeed rolls (12, 14; 30, 32) to break the web (W) along the perforations to form the linerless label.

A roll fed labelling system and associated label are disclosed. The label (12) includes a triggering mark (28) formed of luminophor ink, i.e. containing a fluorescent optical brightening agent, that reflects as visible light directed UV light. A modulated UV light is directed at the label and the modulated reflected visible light is detected and used to trigger a cutting mechanism to separate a single label from the remainder of the roll. The triggering mark need not visibly contrast with the surrounding graphics of the label and may be invisible in visible light. When producing the roll of labels, the amount of brightening agent may be controlled by monitoring the luminescence of the triggering mark relative to a reference level which may be derived with reference to a miximum luminescence of other parts of the label.

A label dispenser in the form of a hand held labeler (30) is shown that is selectively operable in a number of dispense modes. The dispense modes include an on-demand mode in which labels (L) are automatically printed and dispensed as previously printed labels are removed from the labeler. In a manual mode, the labeler is responsive to the manual actuation of a trigger switch to print and dispense a label. The labeler is also responsive to an on line trigger command received from a host device to print and dispense a label. Further, a strip mode allows strips of labels to be automatically printed on demand or in response to the actuation of the trigger switch. An on-demand sensor (60) is employed to detect the presence or absence of a label dispensed from the labeler in the on-demand modes. Further, the quantity of labels or strips of labels automatically dispensed in the on-demand modes may be limited to a specified quantity.
