An assembly (10) of antenna elements (12) is mounted in a unitary structure for transport on a satellite encircling the earth. Each element (12) comprises a horn shaped radiator (18) with opposed arcuate sidewalls (24,26), a rectangular waveguide feed (20), and a transition (22) interconnecting the feed to a throat (36) of the horn. The assembly services a plurality of portions of a communication band within the electromagnetic spectrum. The throats of respective horns are dimensioned for specific frequencies of the respective portions of the communication bands. The antenna elements may provide telemetry and control functions for the satellite. A side-by-side arrangement of the horns permits use of a common meanderline polarizer for conversion of a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized wave for each antenna element.

A slot antenna is provided which includes first (16) and second (12) oppositely disposed metallic plates with a dielectric layer (14) disposed therebetween. An array of horizontal and vertical radiating elements (34,36) are formed on the first metallic plate. An array of horizontal coupling slots (42) and an array of vertical coupling slots (40) are formed in the second metallic plate. The antenna further includes first and second beam formers (28) for providing a necessary field of view beam coverage. The array of horizontal coupling slots are operatively coupled to the first beam former and the array of vertical coupling slots are operatively coupled to the second beam former. Accordingly, the slot antenna may operate to transmit and receive linearly polarized energy. The antenna may further include a polarizer (24) disposed above the upper metallic plate for converting between linear and circular polarization so as to allow for antenna operation with single or dual circular polarization energy.

A single- or dual-circularly polarized earth station antenna is converted into a single- or dual-linearly polarized earth station antenna for accessing linearly polarized satellites. In a first embodiment, a free-space meander line polarizer providing a 90° differential phase shift between two orthogonal polarizations is disposed in front of the earth station antenna feed system. In a second embodiment, a power dividing (transmit) or power combining (receive) network operates in conjunction with differential phase shift circuits to achieve the polarization conversion.
