An object of the present invention is to provide an ESD protection device which is excellent in discharge capacity, at the same time, causes fewer short circuit defects, requires no special step for manufacture, and is excellent in productivity, and a method for manufacturing the ESD protection device. In an ESD protection device including: a ceramic base material including a glass component; opposed electrodes including an opposed electrode on one side and an opposed electrode on the other side, which are formed so as to have their ends opposed to each other on the surface of the ceramic base material; and a discharge auxiliary electrode between the opposed electrodes, which is connected to each of the opposed electrode on one side and the opposed electrode on the other side, and placed so as to provide a bridge from the opposed electrode on one side to the opposed electrode on the other side, a sealing layer for preventing the ingress of the glass component from the ceramic base material into the discharge auxiliary electrode is provided between the discharge auxiliary electrode and the ceramic base material. In addition, in the ESD protection device, a reactive layer including a reaction product formed by the reaction between the constituent materials of the sealing layer and ceramic base material is provided at the interface between the sealing layer and the ceramic base material.

The present invention is directed to a main element of a surge protector device and its fabrication method which uses breakdown phenomenon of a single high resistive film. A breakdown voltage and a place where breakdown occurs can be precisely controlled. The surge protector device changes from its non-conductive state to conductive state very quickly when a surge is induced and returns quickly to the non-conductive state when a surge is removed if said element is surrounded by oxidizing agent. The main element of the surge protector device of the present invention has a single high resistive film on a single metal bar. The high resistive film has a part or parts where electric field concentrates when a surge induced. A breakdown voltage can be controlled precisely by controlling a size including a thickness of the high resistive film of the part. The part is called a fuse part. The main element includes also at least two parts on said metal bar which are continuous to said fuse part. Electrodes are formed on said at least two parts. Therefore said at least two parts are called pad parts.

A lightning arrestor insulator is provided having a discharge gap portion and an arrestor ZnO element device (5) both in the body of the insulator, comprising opposed projecting discharge electrodes (3a,3b) arranged inside the insulator body. The discharge gap portion is formed of a heat resistant protrusion (2) inside the insulator body surrounding the discharge electrodes (3a,3b), and a pair of metal plates and/or electrically conductive ceramic plates (4a,4b) sandwiching the protrusion (2) from both sides thereof and electrically connected to the discharge electrodes. The pair of plates (4a,4b) are joined and airtightly sealed to the protrusion via an inorganic glass (10a,10b). The arrestor has a highly reliable airtight fixing and sealing structure so that accidental troubles in a power supply or distribution line at a normal working voltage can be substantially eliminated, and damage caused by hygromeration and lightning can be noticeably decreased.
