The present invention concerns monolithic graphite electrodes of increased length. The electrode has a main body having a length of more than 3050 mm. Another embodiment disclosed herein includes an electrode column comprising a plurality of such monolithic graphite electrodes. The column has a length of more than 3050 mm of electrode per joint. A further embodiment discussed herein is the practice of increasing the length of the electrode to minimize the occurrence of an electrode joint in the electrode column for a given length. This practice will improve efficiencies for both electrode manufacturers as well as electric arc furnace operators.

The inventive method consists in screwing a pre-prepared new cathode and a nipple to an electrode column. Said nipple has a longitudinal through hole in which a metallic rod, made for example of aluminium or copper is arranged. Said rod is melted at a working temperature of the electrode column and fills cavities in the joint between the electrodes and the nipple, filling partially an additional cavity in the electrode body. A gas mixture is removed from the additional cavity, devoid of liquid metal, through holes in the electrode body, to the working space of the furnace. The inventive electrode for carrying out said method is provided with additional socket plates disposed along the axis thereof in the bottom of a threaded socket. The cavities have different diameters and depths. One of the additional socket plates is connected to the external surface of the electrode through the holes.

An electrode assembly is secured against loosening/unscrewing and cracking of carbon and/or graphite electrodes. The electrodes are connected in columns with threaded connection elements, i.e., carbon nipples. The nipples have at their equator 80 to 110% of the diameter of the electrodes. Although the electrodes are connected by the nipples, they are not in direct contact with each other. This joint design is a 'hybrid' between the widespread conventional nipple joint design and the rarely used male/ female joint design. Further, the male/ female joint design geometrical design is improved by precluding end-face contact of the electrodes and thus all electrical current must pass through the fully engaged threads of the male and female surfaces and not through the end- faces of the electrodes.

An externally threaded coupling member (172) can be threaded into the recesses (166, 168) of the electrodes (157) for coupling two or more electrodes (157) together.
