A microparticle system for use as a retention and drainage aid in the production of alkaline and acid paper products comprises a HMW flocculant polymer (6), an acid colloid (7), and a coagulant or a MMW flocculant (5). The acid colloid (7) comprises an aqueous solution of a water soluble polymer or copolymer of melamine aldehyde, preferably melamine formaldehyde, and is present in an amount ranging between 0.0005 % to 0.5 % by weight based on the dry weight of the solids in the furnish. The HMW flocculant polymer (6) may be added to stock or furnish after the fan pump; and prior to the pressure screen (2); the acid colloid (7) may be added to the stock after the pressure screen (2), and the coagulant/MMW flocculant (5) may be added prior to the fan pump (1). Alternatively, this sequence of chemical additions can be changed, i.e. the acid colloid (7) can be added prior to or after the fan pump (1) or prior to the pressure screen (2). Addition of the microparticle system to the paper furnish improves retention, drainage and sheet formation during the papermaking process.

A method for increasing filler retention of cellulosic fiber sheets is disclosed. In the method, cellulosic fibers with increased anionic sites are treated with either positively charged filler particles and/or amphoteric filler particles or a cationic retention aid and negatively charged filler particles and/or amphoteric filler particles. Cellulosic fiber sheets with retained filler particles are also disclosed.

Improved methods for bleaching kaolin clay and other minerals are provided. More particularly, methods of the present invention employ a hydrosulfite or bisulfite material and a second reducing agent, preferably a reducing agent that contains a Group III element, such as a borohydride, to increase the brightness of kaolin clay and other minerals and reduce color present therein. Methods of the present invention are particularly useful in industries which utilize kaolin clays.

A papermaking process with maintained retention and improved formation is provided. The papermaking process includes the step of adding bentonite to the white water prior to the exposure of the white water to the shear stages of the papermaking system. The bentonite may be added anywhere from the white water silo up to the introduction of the white water to the fan pump. The flocculant may also be added to the white water with or shortly after the addition of the bentonite or a split feed of flocculant may be provided whereby some of the flocculant is added to the white water and an additional portion of flocculant is added to the thin stock prior to the entry of the thin stock into the header box.

Anionic nanocomposites for use as retention and drainage aids in papermaking are prepared by adding an anionic polyelectrolyte to a sodium silicate solution and then combining the sodium silicate and polyelectrolyte solution with silicic acid.

The invention concerns a method for preparing a composition based on TiO2 useful as opacifier which consists in mixing with an aqueous TiO2 dispersion an aqueous dispersion of at least an inorganic spacer, in conditions such that the two mineral species combine into mixed mineral flocs wherein the TiO2 particles are globally spaced from one another by the spacer particles and/or aggregates. The invention also concerns a composition based on TiO2 and SiO2 characterised in that the TiO2 and SiO2 particles are combined therein in the form of mixed mineral flocs based on TiO2 and SiO2 wherein the TiO2 particles are globally isolated from one another by said silica aggregates and its use as opacifier, in particular in the paper industry.

A delaminated and deslimed pigment is bulked with small and controlled quantities of a cationic polyelectrolyte such as polydimethyldiallyl ammonium chloride to produce a highly bulked pigment ideal for improving printability, opacity and sheet gloss in coated paper applications, particularly for LWC rotogravure papers.

The invention relates to a process for producing paper and cardboard by dehydration of pulps, forming sheets and drying said sheets. Polyethylene imines of a molar mass Mw of greater than 500 000 or polymers containing vinyl amine units and having a molar mass of 5000 to 3 million are added to the pulps and subsequently, polymers containing cationic polyacrylic amides or vinyl amine units are added to said pulps, the molar masses Mw of the polymers being at least 4 million in each case. The pulp is then subjected to at least one shearing stage and flocculates by addition of bentonite, colloidal silicic acid or clay.
