Said control means (250) renders the clutch means (174) for reverse motion inoperative, and thereby stops the document placing means (48) at a predetermined stop position, when the amount of rotation of the rotating element (510) during the scanning exposure movement of the document placing means (48) is in a predetermined relation to the amount of rotation of the rotating element (510) after the starting of the returning movement of the document placing means (48).

Accordingly, the flowing current can be limited within a certain range, thus it is possible to stabilize the transfer potential and hence to achieve a stabilized transfer operation.
