By arranging the individual vector data on the time axis, a waveform shape or envelope corresponding to the waveform factors can be built along a reproducing time axis of the performance tone. A computerized music apparatus is installed with a program which is executed to perform reproduction of a musical tone by reading out a corresponding waveform. A storage (103) is provided for storing a plurality of waveforms corresponding to different musical tones, each waveform being stored in the form of a sequence of amplitude value data arranged at a given sampling period. Tapping pads (107) are provided for designating at least one of the stored waveforms to command reproduction of a corresponding one of the musical tones. A panel switch (109) is operable by a user for switching the reproduction of the musical tone between a normal mode and an optional mode. A CPU (101) is allotted with relatively high performance under the normal mode for concurrently reading out a number of the designated waveforms from the storage (103) according to the program so as to concurrently reproduce the number of the corresponding musical tones. Otherwise, the CPU (101) is allotted with relatively low performance under the optional mode such that the number of the musical tones concurrently reproduced under the optional mode is reduced as compared to that under the normal mode while the CPU (101) is allotted with additional performance under the optional mode for digitally processing the designated waveform to impart a scratch effect to the reproduced musical tone according to the program. The number of waveform samples per unit time, i.e., waveform sample forming resolution is variably set depending on characteristics of a tone to be generated, such as construction of harmonic components in the tone. The number is increased for a tone or portion (e.g., attack portion) of a tone containing a relatively great number high-order harmonic components. Conversely, for a tone or portion (e.g., sustain portion) of a tone containing fewer high-order harmonic components, the number is decreased. By thus variably setting the waveform sample resolution, a process for arithmetically forming waveform sample data can be performed without involving significant waste. The waveform sample forming resolution may be variably set independently for each of tone generation channels. Data compression can be achieved by storing the waveform data with the waveform sample forming resolution variably set for each of different waveform segments.
