Provided is a superconducting cable having a structure such that cable cores, each having a superconducting layer, are housed in a thermal insulation pipe and the superconducting layer of each cable core has portions having different critical current values. When an excessive current flows in the superconducting layer in case of a short-circuit failure, the current exceeds the critical current value of the portion having a smaller critical current value first, which results in damage to the portion, suppressing the occurrence of damage to the other normal portion. A superconducting cable line using this superconducting cable and a splitter for accommodating the cable cores therein is also provided.

In the transition area (5) from bolt (2) to tube are provided connecting holes (15). The transition superconductor-normal conductor occurs in the bolt (2). The structure of the low-temperature current supply with heat exchanger for heavy currents makes it possible continuously to heat the current supply from below the transition temperature at its cold end to ambient temperature at its hot end without any ice formation in the region of the hot end. This eliminates the need for dry-gas-filled envelopes and expensive additional heating devices. The structure of such a current supply therefore remains simple and clear.

A process for electrically connecting two superconducting cables (12) is characterized in that the cable sheath and/or the high-resistance coating of the superconducting wires are removed, when present, in order to expose the cable strands, the cable strands are beveled at their ends and the beveled surfaces (24) thus obtained at the cable ends (11) are laid on each other and mechanically compressed. A cable connection is also disclosed for electrically connecting two superconducting cables (12) which may be used for producing flat coils or layered windings in which the cable ends (11) freed from the cable envelope are surrounded by a sleeve (15) made of electroconductive material. The cable connection has a connecting casing (13) made of at least two parts which consists of two halves (13, 14) which surround the cable ends (11) and the sleeve (15).

Between all the sub-leads inside the cryotank there are arranged a number of rows of inclined transverse ribs (13a, 13b, ... 13n, 14a, 14b, ... 14n) of insulating material. On the inner walls of the casing, facing the plate edges of the sub-leads, and at the ends of the transverse ribs, shelves (15, 16) are fixed whereby spiral cooling coils are formed around the current leads from the lower edge of the casing.

A power lead (1) for a cryostat (83) has high temperature superconducting (HTSC) conductors (7) extending inward toward a pool (93) of liquid cryogen in the cryostat (83) in series with normal conductors (21) extending from the HTSC conductors (7) to outside the cryostat. Tubular shrouds (31, 35, 37) vented to atmosphere direct a flow of cryogen vapor along the HTSC conductors (7) to maintain them superconducting, and along the normal conductors (21) to remove Joule heat and heat leakage along the normal conductors. In one embodiment, a pool of liquid nitrogen maintained within a tubular inner shroud (35) is the principal coolant for the normal conductors (21). Helium vapor is circulated over the HTSC conductors and is then directed by an outer tubular shroud (37) around the inner tubular shroud (35) to provide additional cooling for the normal conductors (21). Flexible connectors (13) at one end of each of the HTSC conductors (7) accommodate for individual thermal contractions of these conductors.
