A library apparatus for storage media such as optical disks includes a rotatable cell drum 18 having several columns of cells for the storage media, a load/unload device 22 for inserting and removing cartridges 16 one at a time, at least one drive 36 for reading from or writing to selected media, and an accessor 30 which moves the storage media 16 between the load/unload device 22 and the cell drum 18, and between the cell drum 18 and the drive 36. The load/unload device 22 rotates in a collinear arrangement with the cell drum 18, and can rotate in unison with the cell drum 18, or independently. The collinear arrangement of the cell drum and the load/unload device reduces the overall size of the library. A direct entry/exit (DEE) door 721 exposes several cells in the cell drum 18 when the door is open. The DEE door is provided so that several storage media 730A can be placed in or removed from the cell drum at once, either manually or automatically. The library apparatus automatically rearranges the storage media to fill the cells nearest the drive 36, which reduces the time required to locate storage media in the cell drum and place them in the drive 36. A locking mechanism locks the DEE door when the cell drum rotates, and locks the cell drum when the DEE door is open. Each cell in the cell drum has a skew mounting preventing mechanism and inverse mounting preventing mechanism which prevent incorrect mounting of a cartridge in the cell drum.

The magazine includes a base and a pair of elongated sidewalls which are mounted to the base in a spaced-apart relationship so as to receive the cartridges therebetween. A plurality of shelves are connected between the sidewalls of the magazine at spaced intervals therealong for slidably supporting the cartridges. The magazine sidewalls and shelves form a plurality of receptacles, each receptacle having oppositely located open ends so that each receptacle will accommodate the travel of a cartridge therethrough as the cartridge slides on the shelf. First and second stop devices are mounted within each receptacle for stopping travel of a cartridge through the receptacle at first and second positions therealong. The first position indicates that the cartridge has not been processed and the second position indicates that the cartridge has been processed.

A magazine containing a number of standardized magnetic tape cartridges, for loading into an automated device in which a selected cartridge can be removed from the magazine and inserted into a data reader, has a number cartridge receptacles therein formed by a number of dividers extending the width of the magazine. Each divider consists of electrically conductive polymer, and has an electrical connector at a bottom thereof which extends through a bottom of the magazine, and which engages an electrically conductive path to ground in a base element on which the magazine rests within the device, thereby providing an electrostatic discharge path for each cartridge in each receptacle. Each divider also has an element extending into the receptacle, which is engaged by the cartridge as it is being inserted into the receptacle. Based on the standardized configuration of the cartridge, the element has a profile which is configured to permit the cartridge to move over the element only when the cartridge has been inserted into the receptacle into a selected orientation. If the cartridge is attempted to be inserted into the receptacle in any other orientation, the profile prevents such insertion, thereby insuring that each cartridge will always be inserted in its receptacle in an orientation for correctly inserting the cartridge in the data reader when it is automatically removed from the magazine. For a cartridge properly oriented in the receptacle, the element also serves as a spring to urge the cartridge against a neighboring receptacle, to insure good contact with the electrostatic discharge path.
