The present invention relates to cellular radio communication and in particular to providing information on neighbor cells to enable terminals to perform neighbor cell measurements. In the prior art the terminal attempts to make neighbor cell measurements in a reference signal structure that is the same in the neighbor cell as in the cell the terminal camps in. The present invention is based on the insight that the reference signal structure may differ between neighboring cell for example in the situation of an MBSFN area that is restricted to a region of all cells of a radio network, or in the situation of TDD mode being applied there may be different regions with different allocation of sub-frames for transmission in the uplink and downlink directions. The present invention solves the problem by broadcast information in a cell indicative of the reference signal structure in neighbor cells.

A set of different pilot structures are designed for use in different environments and/or different user behaviours that are expected to occur in a cell. The radio conditions for a user are estimated. Each user is then assigned an area (108A-E) in resource space for its communication, which has a suitable pilot configuration. In one embodiment, the entire resource space is provided with different pilot structures in different parts (110A-D) In advance and allocation of resources to the users are then performed in order to match estimated radio conditions to the provided pilot structure. In another embodiment, allocation is performed first, and then the actual pilot structure is adapted within the allocated resource space area to suit the environmental conditions.

In a communcations system, communications resources are allocated in a dynamic, 'as needed' fashion. No explicit signaling is needed to exchange information pertaining specifically to an allocated communications resource. Such parameters are used to generate or address a communications resource for use by the mobile station. A method implemented in a user terminal (20) for performing a random access procedure is presented. The method comprises transmitting a first random access request message including a random access preamble to a radio base station (18) using a random access channel, RACH, radio resource and receiving a second random access response message from the radio base station (18). The second random access response message indicates a timing change, an identified radio resource of an uplink shared channel, UL-SCH, and a temporary user terminal identity. The method also comprises adjusting a timing at the user terminal (20) for transmitting signals to the radio base station (18) based on the timing change indicated in the second random access response message and, based on the adjusted timing, transmitting a third message to the radio base station (18) over the identified radio resource of the uplink shared channel. The third message includes a user terminal identity that was assigned to the user terminal before the random access procedure is scrambled using a cell-associated scrambling sequence that is not terminal-specific. Further still, the method comprises receiving a fourth contention resolution message from the radio base station (18) to complete the random access procedure.
