The invention relates to a device for the automatic correction of the course of a belt, in particular in letter/parcel sorting facilities. The device comprises an adjusting roller (SR) of variable inclination and capable of rotating, a torque being generated, via a lever arm of the adjusting roller mount and a spring force which acts on said lever arm, on the rotating axis (DA1) to alter the inclination of the adjusting roller (SR). This torque counteracts the torque applied to the adjusting roller mount by the belt tension when the belt runs centrally over the adjusting roller. The belt contact angle at the adjusting roller (SR), the latter's inclination, the belt direction, the tangential direction of the belt (R) on the adjusting roller (SR) and the travel and characteristic of the spring element (FE) are chosen to ensure that, when the adjusting roller (SR) is tilted as a result of a change in moment caused by non-central running of the belt, a direction component is imparted to the belt on the adjusting roller (SR) counter to the deflection from the centre.

These belts are passed around the rollers in such a manner that the object holding belts in one row cross the belts in the other row, in a position in the vicinity of the rollers in the latter row in a direction conversion zone. When the belts pass through this zone, they are bent in accordance with the size of the object articles, so that the direction of advancement of the belts is changed smoothly. The rollers at which the transfer speed is changed consist of sectional rollers composed of a plurality of sectional pulleys mounted rotatably on one shaft. Belts of different speeds are passed around the sectional pulleys, and the pulleys are rotated independently in accordance with belt speed so as to offset a difference in the rotational speed.
