Disclosed is a process for regenerating a used HX alkylation catalyst, wherein X is a halogen, by removing acid soluble oil, produced as an undesirable by-product of the alkylation reaction, from a liquid containing a sulfone compound. The process includes the use of water to induce the formation of the two immiscible liquid phases of ASO and sulfone with water. The two immiscible phases can subsequently be separated from each other.

The novel catalyst comprises a mixture of a hydrogen halide and a sulfone. The invention concerns a process in which monoolefins are used to alkylate isoparaffins in the presence of an HF catalyst. An olefinic feed (14) containing dienes is selectively hydrogenated in zone (2) to reduce its diene content, and used for the HF alkylation of isoparaffin feed (26) in alkylation reactor (8). The reactor effluent (40) is passed to isostripper (32) for separation of product alkylate (54). The proportion of C₃ hydrocarbons in the alkylation reactor feed (30) is minimized by passing the selective hydrogenation product (24), the isoparaffin feed (26) and a recycle stream (28) into an alkylation feed stripper (23), providing an overhead C₃ stream (78, 86) and a bottoms (30) used as alkylation reactor feed. The recycle stream (28) is obtained from the overhead (58) of isostripper (32) after passing through HF stripper (12).

Disclosed is a solid acid catalyst, preparation therefor and use thereof, which has a macropore specific volume of about 0.30-0.50ml/g, a ratio of macropore specific volume to specific length of catalyst particles of about 1.0-2.5 ml/(g·mm), and a ratio of specific surface area to length of catalyst particles of about 3.40-4.50 m 2 /mm, wherein the macropore refers to pores having a diameter of more than 50 nm. Also disclosed is an alkylation catalyst based on the solid acid catalyst, and use thereof in alkylation reactions. The solid acid catalyst and alkylation catalyst show an improved catalyst service life and/or trimethylpentane selectivity when used in the alkylation of isoparaffins with olefins.
