In the high-speed FF/REW mode, it is performed in a tape unloaded condition in which the tape is arranged at a location other than in the tape travelling path, or is housed within a tape cassette. The system has a torque limiter (17, 27) between a driving source (5) and the first or second gear train. When the apparatus operates in a forward or reverse reproduction mode, the torque limiter acts on the first gear train so as to decrease the rotation speed of the supply or take-up reel table depending upon a load applied to the first gear train.

The cam gear retention member (41) is moved to release the retention of the cam gear by means of the transmission gear of the swing arm by driving the reel motor in the reverse direction so as to rotate the cam gear by the biasing member and the motor for switching the operational modes.

A magnetic tape recording and playback apparatus comprises a tape driving system for driving a tape, a recording/playing system for recording/playing/erasing and linking means for mechanically linking the operations of the tape driving system with the recording/playing system. The tape driving system comprises a motor (130), a gear train coupled to the motor and a reel shaft (20, 30) for rotating reels of the cassette. The gear train comprises an planetary gear (180) which swings. The planetary gear selectively rotates the reel shaft in correspondence with respective operation modes of the magnetic recording and playback apparatus. The linking means comprises a cam (170) coupled to the planetary gear and a head base (60) mounting a recording/playing head (80). The cam transmits the driving power from the motor to the head base through the planetary gear. The head base moves corresponding to the shape of the cam and in association with the operation of the planetary gear. Operation such as recording and playing is carried out on the tape by the movement of the head base.

A lock lever (71) is selectively engagable with one of a pair of stop elements (68, 69) on the partially toothless gear (38) to halt rotation thereof in a respective one of the immobile positions thereof, and a spring (53) urges the driving bar (50) toward one of its mode selecting positions (S), with the cam (65), the toothless portions (66, 67) and the stop elements (68, 69) on the partially toothless gear (38) being angularly positioned with respect to each other so that, when the lock lever (71) is disengaged from one of the stop elements (68, 69), the force of the spring (53) on the driving bar (50) is effective, through the action of the cam follower (54) on the cam (65), to initiate turning of the partially toothless gear (38) from its prior immobile position into meshing engagement with the driving gear (40).
