A plug-in fuse assembly comprises a housing made of insulating material and having relatively closely spaced vertical side walls bridged by vertical end walls and a metal plug-in fuse element having laterally spaced, generally parallel confronting terminals at the bottom thereof projecting downwardly from the bottom of said housing and upwardly extending current-carrying extensions of said terminals and a unique S-shaped fuse link extending between said current-carrying extensions. The S-shaped fuse link has a 45° angled upper and lower leg of at least about one-half the length of the central leg thereof and a width to thickness ratio of about 1/3 or less which maximises its volume without the position contraints placed on the fuse link. The current-carrying extensions have upper vertical outer margins which are inwardly offset from a given point to the tops thereof with respect to the corresponding vertical outer margins of the plug-in fuse element below the same, to provide clearance spaces for the downward passage of the vertical end walls of the housing, so that the overall width of the fuse is not significantly increased, if at all, by the housing end walls.

A miniature fuse suitable for printed circuit applications and a manufacturing method therefor features preferably a generally rectangular elongated insulating body having a fuse element preferably diagonally disposed in a fuse cavity therein and terminals preferably insert molded therein and extending preferably from the opposite ends thereof. The cavity preferably opens onto opposite longitudinal sides of the body, but provision may be made to optionally close-off one of the cavity openings by a cover plate. The body is sealed by a sleeve which is preferably a semi-rigid expandable member but which could be a piece of expandable shrink tubing. Lay-in grooves preferably extend from the opposite ends of the cavity to conductive fuse attachment surfaces which are initially preferably bendable tabs located beyond the outer surface of the body to allow the fuse element to be conveniently attached or captured thereby during fuse assembly. The projecting tabs are then bent into the fuse body, and a preferably semi-rigid transparent insulating sleeve is then applied around and sealed to the sides of the body.

At spaced locations along the length of the fusible element, there are bodies of a material that exothermically reacts when heated to a predetermined temperature. Connected between the terminals independently of the fusible element is a triggering circuit. The bodies of exothermic material are connected in good heat-transfer relationship with the triggering circuit and the fusible element so that the heating effect of current through the triggering circuit upon disruption of the fusible element causes the material of said bodies to exothermically react and thus cause further disruption of the fusible element at additional locations respectively located adjacent said bodies.
