A plurality of electric blasting caps are fired through the ignition system which includes a transformer (19) having a primary winding (17) and a secondary winding (21). The secondary winding (21) of the transformer (19) is connected to the resistive elements (53) of the blasting caps (55) through a blasting circuit which is electromagnetically coupled to the resistive elements (53) of the blasting caps (55) via a small toroid transformer. A D.C. voltage is stored on a storage capacitor (3) which has one end connected to the center point (15) of the primary winding (17). The other ends of each half of the primary winding (17) are connected through a driver circuit (29) to ground. Each driver circuit (29) is enabled by a flip-flop (35) at predetermined intervals, whereby the storage capacitor (3) will discharge through the appropriate half of the primary, to thereby produce a pulse train at the output of the secondary. The pulse train provides the ignition power for igniting the electric blasting caps.

This invention provides an improved method of foaming a water -in-oil emulsion explosive wherein a gassing agent which is a water-in-oil emulsion containing an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite in its discontinuous phase is mixed with the emulsion explosive.The sodium nitrite reacts with ammonium nitrate in the discontinuous phase of the emulsion explosive to generate small particles of gas which are distributed throughout the explosive.The method improves the gas bubble distribution and enhances the sensitivity of the explosive to blasting cap initiation.

The composition of the booster comprises a low melting point nitrate salt or salt mixture having dissolved or finely dispersed therein an acetylenic substance and void containing material. The booster is safe and economic to manufacture and sufficiently powerful to initiate insensitive blasting agents.
