In connection with the packaging of items or loose material in sheet packings it is known to use a web of cohering flat bag members, which is successively conveyed to a filling station, in which the bag members are opened, one by one, for filling and subsequent closing and separation from the web. The free mouth edges of the bag members or the web are profiled for supported conveyance on opposed carrier rods, tubes or gripping chains which, just before the filling station, diverge from each other for effecting opening of the bag members. The invention provides for a flat bag web, the upright edge strip portions of which are caused to be folded down over respective opposed carrier chains. These strip portions are prepared with a row of perforations which, by the said down-folding, are moved down into holding contact with holding pins upwardly projecting from the carrier chains, whereby a very safe carrying and conveying engagement is obtained without any special profilation of the mouth edges and with a simple design of the carrier chains.

Methods are known for conveying bags in the form of a continuous web such that they open at a suitable place during continuous conveyance and during maintenance of the open condition so they can be filled and sealed after closing. Prior art methods utilise complicated methods for retention. According to the invention, the bag web is suspended on horizontal studs mounted on carrier chains running in such a way that the bags open and a surrounding groove around the studs along the chains prevents the bags from falling off during passage of filling stations etc.

With the purpose of achieving a particularly simple carrying handle in a bag with substantial reduction of material, a carrier section 4 is formed by a side edge 5. The carrier section 4 is connected with an adjacent bag side 3 by means of connecting zones 7 which delimit a pocket 8 having a downwardly facing opening 9. The pocket 9 thus constitutes a carrying handle for accommodating the user's fingers when carrying the bag. Due to distribution of tensile forces from areas 12 at the pocket opening, it becomes possible to achieve great strength even when using film material which is thin compared with traditional thickness.

For the temporary blocking of a flow of folded newspapers which are fed in overlapping scale formation on a conveyor belt, e.g. for the bundling of the newspapers, it is known to introduce a stop element down against the upper side of the newspaper track, so that the following newspapers are held back, while the underlying newspapers continue to be conveyed away from the relevant overlapping area. This can give rise to distinct smudging effects, which with the invention are avoided in that at the lower end of the stop element (32) there is provided a sheet tongue (34) which is inclined slightly downwards and which extends outwards against the newspaper flow, and which when the stop element is lowered will wedge itself in under the front edge of the next following newspaper, and hereby absorb a great part of the weight load of the overlying newspapers down against the newspapers which continue to be fed. The stop element is preferably introduced in the longitudinal direction of the sheet tongue, so that when deactivated the sheet tongue is quickly retracted substantially in the direction in which the newspapers are conveyed, whereby the newspapers which have been blocked are immediately released for further feeding forward.

For the feeding of packaging items in the form of erected cartons to a packing line,use is made of an angle transition with means which fully ensure that items which arrive more or less regularly are delivered and forwarded from the angle transition with a very high degree of positional accuracy on the packing line. At the delivery end, use is made of a decidedly friction-providing conveyor belt (2) which successively supplies items to the angle transition itself, which consists of smooth, rotating rollers (8) which by their rotation complete the delivery of the individual items, after which the delivery conveyor (2) is reversed to avoid the delivered item being touched by the next item. The feeding of the items along the smooth rollers to the further-forwarding catch-plate belt (30,34) is effected by means of lower catch-plates (18) which extend upwards between the rollers (8), and which are fed further out over the ends of the rollers for secure transfer of the items to a system of conveyor belts with their own catch-plates (32,36) for further transport of the items.

A method and an apparatus for wrapping a stack (12, 13) of superposed sheets, brochures and/or folders with a wrapping sheet (15) is described. The stack (13) is travelling in a first direction (4) on a first conveyor (2) defining a conveying path. A supply of wrapping sheets (14) is placed in line with the first conveyor (2). At the downstream end of the first conveyor (2) a rotating waver wheel (10) is arranged. This waver wheel pulls a top sheet (15) of the supply of wrapping sheets (14) and turns the wrapping sheet (15). Downstream of the first conveyor (2) a second conveyor (3) is provided defining a gap (5) between the first and second conveyors in which the wrapping sheet is inserted. As the stack (13) engages the wrapping sheet (15), the rotating waver wheel (10) provides means for folding the sheet around the stack.

There is disclosed a method and an apparatus for handling a packing (1) by filling, folding and winding of the packing. The apparatus (12) is structured modularly with a number of juxtaposed stations (13) in which there are provided modular operation units for filing, folding, application of glue, welding, embossing, winding and laying off of the packing. This occurs in a process where the packing (1) is fixed and secured to a conveyor belt (17) through and between handling process steps and the work stations (13) of the apparatus, as securing of the packing to the conveyor belt is provided. The securing may possibly occur by using vacuum acting through apertures (21) in the conveyor belt (17) covering vacuum chambers which via valve arrangement may be subjected to vacuum individually. The packing (1) is preferably a tobacco-pouch-like packing (1), where a flap (2) at a side edge (11) is provided with an adhesive strip (10) which can be used for a reopenable closing of the packing, as the flap is folded about folding lines (8, 9), whereby the adhesive strip is brought into abutment against a rear wall on the packing.
