In another embodiment, a series of fluid passages are formed between the diverter and the interior of the valve body to permit a small firm or thickness of fluid to extend between portions of the diverter and the valve body, thereby forming a fluid bearing.

The bone fixing device has threads at both a leading end (240) and a trailing end (230), and the pitch of the threads (235, 245) are greater at the trailing end. This causes the leading end of the bone fixing device to travel more slowly through the bone than the trailing end, which loads the threads of the screw to put the screw under compression, so that the threads bite more effectively into the bone. A jig and method for insertion of two bone fixing devices are also described. The jig defines parallel planes of insertion which cross when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the parallel planes.

The primary identifier is in the form of a plurality of identification elements (20) embedded in the object (10), the identification elements (20) being visually detectable when illuminated by infrared or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation but being visually indistinguishable from the rest of the object (10) when illuminated with visible light. The identification elements (20) are randomly distributed so that the positions of the identification elements (20) are unique to the object (10), and the object (10) has a reference point in the form of a printed symbol (30) defining an area of the object (10) in which at least some of the identification elements (20) are provided. A method and a detector for verifying that such an object (10) is genuine are also described.

A resistance mechanism suitable for applications such as resistance exercise equipment, cable reels, garage doors and other equipment requiring a resistive force. Resistance packs (26) include circular rims (28) and central hubs (30) connected by deformable spokes (32). The packs (26) are stacked in pairs with the rims (28) in each pair pinned together and the hubs (30) rotatable relative to one another. Each hub has a spline (34) connection with the hub of the next resistance pack in the adjacent pair. This provides a series arrangement of the resistance packs (26) which allows a long extension of the actuator with the spokes (32) of each pack being deformed only slightly. A spiral pay out pulley for the cord assists in avoiding varying resistance with extension of the cord. The mechanism includes a preload system for applying a preload force to the resistance packs and a visual indicator for indicating the level of the preload force. An alternative construction involves forming the resistance packs in a single base having a pair of the resistance devices housed together. The devices may include arms connected by peripheral portions to provide loops that are looped around walls on the base to avoid a need for a bonded connection of the arms to the rims.

A method and apparatus for calculating distance in an assembly operation such as a pick and placement operation. The method comprises the steps of providing an assembly comprising a first part, a second part and driver means arranged to selectively move the first part relative to the second part. The method also includes actuating the driver means to move the first part between a first position (110) and a second position (100) and registering speed and/ or acceleration data of the driver means between the first position and the second position. The time interval trto for the first part to move between the first position and the second position is measured. The distance moved by the first part between the first and the second position using the measured time interval and the data registered from the driver means can then be calculated.
