The magnet system is an outer annular magnet 26, an inner annular magnet 27, and a yoke 28. A novel design of the nozzle enhances the arc-extinguishing capability.

A disk cartridge transportation apparatus in- dudes a carrier mechanism supported for movement along a guide shaft for transporting disk cartridges between a disk cartridge stocker and a recording/reproducing unit. The carrier mechanism includes a lift base being movable along the guide shaft, and a cartridge transporting mechanism supported on the lift base for movement between the stocker and the recording/reproducing unit. A support member is supported for rotation on the lift base and extends perpendicularly with respect to the guide shaft. A rotating mechanism including a first motor is mounted on the support member for rotating it with respect to the lift base. A cartridge holding mechanism for holding a disk cartridge is capable of advancing and retreating along the support member with respect to the disk cartridge stocker and the recording/reproducing unit. A drive mechanism including a second motor is mounted on the support member for moving the cartridge holding means along the support member. The first and second motors are connected to a controller via a single flexible cable. Thus, the apparatus is inexpensive to manufacture and is high in assembling efficiency.

A cantilever for an atomic force microscope comprises: a diamond stylus 110 disposed to confront the surface of a sample for the purpose of detecting atomic force; a stylus 160 holding portion at least a portion of which is made of a magnetic material and which holds the diamond stylus; and a lever 120 having an end which is secured and the other end to which the stylus holding portion is fastened, the lever being deformed in accordance with the atomic force acting between the diamond stylus and the sample. A method of manufacturing the cantilever comprises the steps of: securing a rough diamond to a stylus holding portion at least a portion of which is made of magnetic substance; forming a stylus by grinding the rough diamond; magnetizing the magnetic substance of the stylus holding portion; applying an adhesive to the surface of a lever; securing the stylus holding portion on the surface of the lever on which the adhesive is applied by magnetic force of a magnet disposed in the vicinity of the lever; and removing the magnet from the lever after the adhesive has been hardened and the magnetic substance of the stylus holding portion is demagnetized.

A boiling cooler device for cooling thyristers, etc., is made of copper and utilizes water or an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol as the cooling medium. The cooler fins 31 constituting the evaporators of the device are disposed to a side of a common liquid reservoir 33 directly coupled to the condensor 24, to be coummunicated thereto via substantially horizontally extending ducts 32 (Figs. 8 and 9). Each cooler fin 31 may be coupled to the common reservoir 33 via two parallel ducts 34 and 35 (Fig. 10). The cooler fins 31 may each comprise vertically extending interior conduits 42 at the interior side of the heat absorbing surfaces 31a (Figs. 13 through 15). The evaporator 51 amy comprise a first cooling medium conduit 53 and second cooling medium conduits 54 having a smaller overall cross sectional area than the first conduit 53 (Figs. 32 and 33). Metal particles 61, preferably having a particle size of from about 400 to 1000 micormeters, may be attached to the heat transfer surfaces of the cooler fins 31 (Figs. 41 and 42). Further, optimal ranges of a dimensionless number F for stabilizing the cooling efficiency is disclosed for respective cooling media.
