    摘要: A self-plugging blind fastener (10, 74, 90) suitable for fastening apertured sheets together, and of the type comprising a body (12, 78) having a shank (16), headed at one end, and an axial bore (20) in which is disposed an elongate stem (14, 76, 92) which, in use, is pulled to expand the shank (16) and lock part of the stem (14, 76, 92) in the body (12, 78), has improved means for locking the stem (14, 76, 92) in the body (12, 78). The head end of the bore (20) is of reduced diameter and presents a stop-shoulder (30). The stop-shoulder (30) is an annular skirt (34) partly separated from surrounding material by an annular cleavage (32), and presents a planar stop-face (31, 84) facing away from the head-end. The stem (14, 76, 92) comprises a plug (42) which is connected by a breakneck (46) to a stem-tail (40) for pulling the plug (42) into the bore (20) of the body (12, 78).
    The plug has an annular locking recess (50) spaced from the breakneck (46), and is radially enlarged on the side of the locking recess (50) remote from the breakneck (46) to provide a plug-shoulder (62) and shank-enlarging means (66, 68, 69). The plug-shoulder (62) presents a planar face (64, 94) for engaging the stop face (31, 84) of the body (12, 78) and deforming the annular skirt (34) into the locking recess (50) during setting of the fastener (10, 74, 90). The planar face (64) of the plug (42) and the planar stop-face (31) of the body (12) may both be at right angles to the axis of the bore (20), or either the planar face (94) or the stop-face (84) may be inclined at an angle not greater than 10° to a plane at right angles to the axis, thereby enabling deformation of the skirt (34) to begin at a lower force than would be required if the faces (64 and 84 or 31 and 94) were parallel.

The counter (132) can be reset to zero only by use of a separate key (142), when a new mandrel is installed in the rivet placing apparatus.

    摘要: Repetition pull-through blind riveting apparatus (10), of the type comprising a reusable and reloadable mandrel with an enlarged head which is pulled through each tubular rivet in turn to install the rivet is provided with a safety device (141) for counting the total number of times the mandrel has been pulled. The apparatus includes pneumatically-operated mandrel pulling means, and a counter (132) counts the number of times the pressure of the air powering the pulling device reaches a pressure slightly below that required to pull the mandrel head through a rivet. The counter (132) is arranged to actuate, when a safe limit number of pulls has been counted, both a shut-off valve (137) to shut-off the supply of pressure air to the mandrel pulling means, and a visual indicator (135). The counter (132) can be reset to zero only by use of a separate key (142), when a new mandrel is installed in the rivet placing apparatus.

    摘要: A swageable tubular member 12 for a pin and swageable member fastener of the type which carries a plurality of combination lock and breakgrooves, is provided with a projecting skirt 32 at that end of the collar which, in use, is remote from the workpieces and is the first to be swaged towards the pin. The skirt 32 is of reduced wall thickness, having an internal diameter which is greater than that of the remainder of the bore of tubular member, which it meets at an annular shoulder 34 which is substantially at right-angles to the bore axis. When the tubular member is swaged on to the pin, the skirt 32 does not engage the pin but projects beyond the pin-­break which occurs adjacent the shoulder 34.

    摘要: A breakstem blind rivet comprises a deformable tubular shell (11) of aluminium alloy having a bore (12) inside it. A stem (13) of low-carbon steel is a close fit within the bore, extending along the bore and having a head (14) adjacent the tail end (15) of the shell. The outside of the shell is formed with at least three zones (27, 28, 29) of modified strength spaced apart along its length, these zones being in the form of shallow grooves rolled into the surface. The spacing between each zone (27, 28, 29) and the next progressively decreases as the distance along the shell from the tail end (15) increases. Alternatively the grooves may be formed by a turning process.

    摘要: A device for automatically replenishing and exchanging hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic system (such as that of a fastener placing tool (31)) comprises a lower reservoir (29) for holding new hydraulic fluid (39) and an upper reservoir (28) for receiving old hydraulic fluid. The device connects with the system to be replenished by means of a single hydraulic fluid connection (17) at the bottom of the lower reservoir (29). An entry port (25) to the second reservoir is positioned opposite the connection (17) at the bottom end of a tube (23) leading to the top of the second reservoir.
    In use, the device is connected to the hydraulic system through the connection (17) and the system is pressurised. Old hydraulic fluid is forced up through the connection (17) at high speed and passes through the new hydraulic fluid (39) in the lower reservoir (29), through the port (25), up the tube (23) and down into the upper reservoir (28) where it is retained. When the system is depressurised, new hydraulic fluid (39) is drawn down through the same connection (17) into the hydraulic system.

    摘要: A hand-held rivet installation tool is provided with an air- flow ejector (23, 26, 28) to eject broken off rivet stems. The tool has a base (71) on which it can stand on a level surface. A valve (73) is provided with its actuating plunger (75) protruding from the base. When the tool is standing on its base, the plunger (75) is pushed in and the valve (73) shuts off the air supply to the ejector. When the tool is picked up again the valve (73) stays in the off position until the toot-actuating trigger (31) is operated again. Thus needless waste of air through the ejector, when the tool is not being used, is eliminated.
