Abstract:
A catalyst system suitable for preparing substantially terminally unsaturated atactic polymers or copolymers of α - olefins having a number average molecular weight in the range 300 - 500,000 comprises: A) a metallocene complex; and B) a cocatalyst comprising: i) an aluminoxane; and ii) a Group III metal alkyl compound having at least 2 carbon atoms. The use of the Group III metal compound allows for a reduction in the aluminoxane content in the cocatalyst. Preferred metallocenes are those having alkyl substitution on the cyclopentadienyl rings and the preferred Group III metal alkyl compound is triisobutyl aluminium.
Abstract:
A composition suitable for use as an additive to lubricating oils comprises a mixture of alkaline earth metal sulphurised hydrocarbyl phenates having hydrocarbyl substituents derived from (i) either propylene tetramer or butylene trimer and (ii) at least one alkene having greater than 12 carbon atoms. As compared with a composition comprising hydrocarbyl phenate derived from propylene tetramer or butylene trimer alone the compositions of the invention are more compatible with hydrocarbyl sulphonates, commonly found with phenates in lubricating oil additive packages.
Abstract:
An additive concentrate having a TBN greater than 300 suitable for incorporation into a finished lubricating oil composition comprising:- (I) a lubricating oil soluble sulphurised or non-sulphurised alkaline earth metal hydrocarbyl phenate derived either from a hydrocarbyl phenate or its precursors and modified by reaction to incorporate:
(i) an aldehyde, and (ii) from greater than 2 to less than 40% by weight based on the weight of the concentrate of either (a) at least one carboxylic acid having the formula:- wherein R is a C₁₀ to C₂₄ alkyl or alkenyl group and R¹ is either hydrogen, a C₁ to C₄ alkyl group or a -CH₂-COOH group, or an anhydride or ester thereof, or (b) a di- or polycarboxylic acid containing from 36 to 100 carbon atoms or an anhydride or ester thereof, and (II) a lubricating oil,
wherein the amount of lubricating oil (II) in the additive concentrate is such that the ratio of the weight of the additive concentrate to the weight of the hydrocarbyl phenate or its precursors from which the modified sulphurised or non-sulphurised phenate is derived is at least 3.0.
Abstract:
A process for producing a dispersant/VI improver for use in finished lubricating oil compositions comprises reacting in a normally liquid substantially inert organic solvent (a) a copolymer of an olefin and a monomer having the structure:- X - @ - HC = CH - @ - X (I) wherein X and X are the same or different provided that at least one of X and X is such that the copolymer can function as carboxylic acylating agent, (b) a succinimide, and (c) a primary or secondary amine or a mixture thereof. Preferred copolymers comprise maleic anhydride as a comonomer. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the amine is a monoamine, and a polyamine is also added; the monoamine and polyamine are added to the reaction medium prior to addition of the succinimide.
