The present invention relates to an arrangement on a spreader for lifting containers, the arrangement comprising a flipper arm (5) which is supported at the corner of the spreader such that the flipper arm is pivotable between an upraised rest position and a lowered operative position wherein the flipper arm is effective for positioning of the spreader corner relative to the corresponding corner of a container upon connecting the spreader to the container. The arrangement is characterized in that the flipper arm is carried on a rotatable shaft (9) and driven by a motor (17), and wherein a power transmission is inserted between the motor and the flipper arm, the power transmission being effective for the transfer of torque from the motor to the flipper arm upon energizing the motor, and operative for locking the flipper arm in its pivoted position upon non-energizing the motor.

The invention refers to a positioning means in a spreader assembly, the positioning means comprising an articulated arm (8), a first end (12) of which is connected to a primary spreader frame (2) and a second end (13) of which is selectively connectable to a secondary spreader frame (3), wherein the first and second arm ends connect pivotally in horizontal planes of the associated spreader frames as well as in vertical planes intersecting a longitudinal axis of each primary and secondary spreader frames. According to the invention, the second arm end (13) is selectively connectable and non-connectable, respectively, to a seat (30) mounted on the secondary spreader frame (2), the seat having an insert or connecting end facing upwards from the spreader frame, and the second arm end carrying means mating with the seat in result of a driven and remotely controlled, vertical or substantially vertical downward movement of the second arm end upon connection.

The invention relates to a spreader comprising inner (2) and outer (3) locking means connectable to the corner castings of a single container and optionally to two containers connectable in twin relation to the spreader, the outer locking means (3) carried in pairs in the ends, respectively, of extendable beams (4,5) telescopically supported in a main beam (6), and the inner locking means (2) movable in pairs on the main beam exterior, wherein, in each set (2 1 ,3 1 ; 2 2 ,3 2 ) of associated pairs of inner and outer locking means, the pair of inner locking means (2 1 ; 2 2 ) is operable for displacement in the length direction of the spreader through a second drive means (7) which is separate from a first drive means (8) that is operative for displacement of the outer locking means (3 1 ; 3 2 ) through extension/retraction of the extendable beam (4; 5). According to the invention, the first and second drive means are individually powered and separately operated through a control system that synchronizes the concurrent displacements of the outer and inner locking means without a mechanical connection being arranged between associated pairs of outer and inner locking means in extension/retraction movements. In accordance herewith, the invention also advises a method for synchronizing the concurrent displacements of associated outer and inner locking means in longitudinal directions of a spreader designed for single and twin lift operations, comprising the steps of feeding power individually to separate first and second drive means that are operative for displacement of the outer and inner locking means, respectively, and controlling the power supplies to the first and second drive means for synchronized displacements without connecting mechanically the associated outer and inner locking means.

A method for processing two containers in side by side relation in a single lowering/lifting step, and for adjustment of a lateral distance and/or lateral, relative angle between the two containers during transfer and lowering to release the containers in side by side relation.
