Abstract:
The disclosed invention relates to a composition comprising finely divided particles of an inorganic material treated with a cellulose derivative modified by or containing at least one ionic substituent. The disclosed invention further relates to a method of providing paper of improved brightness. The disclosed invention also relates to a method of providing finely divided particles of inorganic material, treating the particles with a cellulose derivative modified by or containing at least one ionic substituent, and adding the treated particles to cellulose fiber during an alkaline process for making paper. Also, an alkaline paper comprising the finely divided particles of inorganic material treated with the cellulose derivative is disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an acid-stabilized calcium carbonate slurry having a pH of less than 7, preferably between about 6 and about 7, containing water, calcium carbonate, preferably precipitated calcium carbonate, and an acid-stabilizer of a water soluble calcium salt, a weak acid, a chelating agent, a weak acid capable of chelating calcium ion, or a mixture thereof. The acid-stabilizer is present in an amount sufficient to provide an aqueous calcium carbonate slurry having an increased calcium ion concentration and an acidic pH. In a typical acid-stabilized calcium carbonate slurry of the invention, the acid-stabilizer is present in an amount sufficient to provide a calcium ion concentration of about 1 millimolar to about 5 molar, preferably from about 1 to about 120 millimolar. The invention also relates to a method of making the acid-stabilized calcium carbonate slurry of the invention, to a method of forming a filled paper, that includes the step of adding the acid-stabilized calcium carbonate slurry of the invention to a papermaking pulp in a process for making acid paper, and to a filled paper produced according to the method of the invention
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for concentrating slurries by removing liquid in a single effect unit maintained under vacuum to effect low temperature flashing of the liquid. The single effect unit comprises a single flash column with separate recirculation loops, one to preheat incoming slurry for concentration and a separate loop for withdrawal of concentrated slurry. Vapor from the flash column can be treated to separate liquid from other components in the vapor.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a product, a process for its preparation and the use of such in plastic film production. More specifically, the present invention relates to an antiblock talc, a process for the preparation of such and its use as an additive in the production of polyolefin film. Polyolefin films produced according to the process of the present invention are useful in a broad range of packaging and film covering applications.
Abstract:
A synthetic silicate pellet is provided having a component(s) of calcium and magnesium either together or in the alternative. Such pellet is further provided with either an aluminate silicate binder and/or an ion flow catalyst, increasing yields and improves processing economics. The sized synthetic silicate pellet has use as a glass batch component.
