Provided are an apparatus and method for managing connection identifiers (CIDs) in a multi-hop relay Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) system. An apparatus is provided for a Relay Station (RS) in a multi-hop relay cellular communication system. The apparatus includes a database, a controller, and a transmitter. The database is used for managing a Connection Identifier (CID) set assigned to the RS by a Base Station (BS). The controller accesses the database to assign one CID of the CID set to a Mobile Station (MS) when receiving a control message from the MS. The transmitter constructs a response message including the CID assigned to the MS and transmits the response message to the MS. The MS can be assigned a CID directly from the RS in a condition that the BS is not involved, so that the initial ranging procedure can be rapidly performed.

An apparatus and method of providing relay service in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication are provided. The communication method includes dividing an entire frequency band into a plurality of bands to support a plurality of links; determining subcarrier allocation schemes for the divided bands independently from one another; and communicating using the determined subcarrier allocation schemes by the plurality of the links.When the direct link and the relay link are distinguished through the frequency multiplexing in the multihop relay BWA communication system, the present invention enables the independent channel estimation from the relay link by adopting the dedicated pilot based permutation scheme for the relay link.

An apparatus and method of controlling an action change gap interval in a multi-hop relay cellular network, includes constructing a first symbol included in a first frame as a first interval for a first action change and a second interval for exchanging data; and constructing a last symbol included in the first frame as a first interval for exchanging data and a second interval for a second action change. Accordingly, the system capacity and the system efficiency can be raised by reducing the overhead due to the action change gap in the cellular network.

An apparatus and method for canceling ISI in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. In a transmitter of the broadband wireless communication system, a controller acquires a CP length, a puncturing pattern, and a time sample interval according to a delay spread. A puncturer punctures coded data in the puncturing pattern. An IFFT processor IFFT-processes the punctured coded data and outputs sample data. A CP inserter generates an OFDM symbol by inserting a copy of a last part of the sample data before the sample data. Here, the length of the last part of the sample data is equal to the CP length. A D/A converter converts the OFDM symbol to an analog signal at a sampling rate determined by the time sample interval.

Disclosed is a method for generating a preamble sequence to decrease a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) through at least two antennas in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system. The method comprises generating a first preamble sequence in which odd data of the preamble sequence becomes null data and even data of the preamble sequence becomes data, the first preamble sequence being adapted to be transmitted via one of the two antennas; and generating a second preamble sequence in which even data of the preamble sequence becomes null data and odd data of the preamble sequence becomes data, the second preamble sequence being adapted to be transmitted via another one of the two antennas.
