Subject of the invention is a composition stabilized against premature polymerization comprising a) a light olefin monomer, and an effective polymerization inhibiting amount of b) at least one phenylenediamine of formula (I) wherein R1, R2, and R3 are the same or different and are hydrogen, straight or branched chain alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, straight or branched chain alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms which is substituted by one to three aryl groups, aryl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or aryl of 1 to 12 carbon atoms which is substituted by one to three alkyl groups of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and c) at least one nitroxide of formula (II) wherein R4 and R5 are independently alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or are together pentamethylene; and Z1 and Z2 are each methyl or Z1 and Z2 together form a linking moiety which may or may not contain heteroatoms or carbonyl groups and which additionally may be substituted by hydroxy, cyanohydrin, amino, alkoxy, amido, ketal, carboxy, hydantoin, carbamate, or a urethane group. A further subject of the invention is a method for inhibiting the premature polymerization of reactive light olefins and the use of a phenylendiamine together with at least one nitroxide to prevent polymerization of reactive light olefins.

A method for improving purification efficiency when distilling off aldehyde contaminants during chemical manufacturing processes by adding a substituted aromatic amine having electron donating group substituents prior to the distillation column. The method is particularly useful for removal of aldehydes such as acrolein, generated as a by-product of acrylonitrile manufacture. Preferred aromatic amines are 2-amino aniline, 3,4-dimethyl aniline and 4-ethyl aniline.

The compositions are for addition to corrosive aqueous acid solutions to reduce or inhibit the corrosive effects thereof on metal surfaces.

A method of inhibiting the formation of fouling deposits occurring on the surfaces of an alkaline scrubber used to wash acid gases generated during the manufacture of olefins, which deposits are formed during the scrubbing of pyrolytically produced hydrocarbons contaminated with oxygen-containing compounds with a caustic solution having a pH >7, which comprises adding an effective depositing-inhibiting amount of a caustic solution-soluble substituted aromatic amine selected from the group consisting of: 2-aminophenol, 4-aminophenol, 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and salts thereof, 4-amino- o -cresol, 3-aminophenol, 2-aminobenzoic acid and salts thereof, 3-aminobenzoic acid and salts thereof, and 4-aminobenzoic acid and salts thereof to the caustic solution. A preferred substituted aromatic amine is the sodium salt of 4-amino- benzenesulfonic acid in aqueous solution.
