A modular connector (10) includes a set of pairs of modular inserts (16) configured to mate with each other to convey electrical signals or power in a structure such as a vehicle. Each pair of modular inserts (16) are coupled to their respective wiring lines and supported by their respective structures. One of each pair of modular inserts (16) is supported by a receptacle shell (22), while the other is supported by a plug shell (26). The modular inserts (16) are characterized with removable characterized buttons (130) for cooperation respectively with characterizations slots (90) provided in the receptacle shell (22) and plug shell (26). The characterization scheme ensures that incorrect modular inserts are not loaded onto the wrong position of the receptacle shell and plug shell. The shields of the wiring lines are grounded to grounding contacts provided in the corresponding modular inserts (16). The receptacle shell is coupled to a grounding shell supported by the vehicle with the corresponding grounding contacts contacting the grounding shell for grounding. The plug shell (22) is coupled to the receptacle shell (26) to place the respective contacts (184,186) in the pairs of modular inserts (16) in mating connections to convey signals or power. The grounding contacts of the modular inserts (16) in the plug shell (26) contact the grounding shell for grounding. The connector is easy and quick to assemble without the need for tools and with savings in assembly time.

An electrical plug (1) for connecting an electrical cable (11) such as an electrical heating cable to an electrical power outlet. Contained within the housing (3) of the plug are first and second contact members (13, 15) which comprise a first prong and a second prong, respectively, each prong being suitable for insertion into a socket of an electrical power outlet. A cutting module (25) and a cutting element (37) which fits within the cutting module are used to remove polymer, e.g. insulation or a conductive polymer composition, from the first and second electrodes of the cable at the end of the cable in order to make electrical connection from the electrodes to the first and second contact members. Present within the cutting module are first and second electrode-contact sections (33, 35) positioned on the concave arcuate inner surface (29) of the wall of a cavity (27) in the cutting module. The electrode-contact sections can be electrically connected to the first and second contact members. The cutting element (37) comprises a cutting wedge (59) which has (a) a convex arcuate outer surface (65) which complements the inner surface of the wall of the cutting module, and (b) piercing means (61) suitable for penetrating the polymer. The cutting element rotates within the cavity of the cutting module from an opened position to a closed position so that, after the cable has been inserted into the cavity and the cutting element is rotated, the rotation first causes the piercing means to penetrate the polymer between the first and second electrodes, then causes an end portion of the polymer to separate from the electrodes, and then forces the first electrode into physical contact with the first electrode-contact section and the second electrode into physical contact with the second electrode-contact section. The cutting module and the cutting element can also be used as a tool for removing polymer from an electrical cable, and in a connector to make electrical connection from a first electrical cable to a second electrical cable.

A melt-extrudable conductive polymer composition which contains a polymer, a particulate conductive filler and a particulate non conductive filler. When a standard strip heater is made from the composition and tested in a UL VW-1 test, it has comparable performance to a heater made from a second composition which is the same as the composition but which does not contain the non conductive filler. When tested in a standard arcing fault test, the standard heater will trip a fuse in less time than is required by the second heater, i.e. in less than 30 seconds. A preferred nonconductive filler is Sb2O3.

A highly thermally conductive but yet highly conformable composition (1) is made from gel filled with alumina. The use of α-alumina in which at least 10 weight % of the α-alumina particles have a particle size of at least 74 νm makes possible the high filler levels needed to attain high thermal conductivity, without causing the decrease in elongation and softness normally associated with high filler levels. Further improvements are observed if the α-alumina and the gel (or precursor thereof) are mixed with a specific energy input of at least 10 Joule/g. The input of such specific energy has the effect making the resulting composition more conformable than it otherwise would be. The composition may be internally supported by a flexible matrix such as an open-celled foam (2) or a fabric (3).
