An organophilic clay comprising the reaction product of: (a) a smectite-type clay; and (b) a quaternary ammonium compound or compounds selected from the group consisting of: wherein R1 is an alkyl or aralkyl- ester group having 8 to 30 carbon atoms and R2, R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of (i) R1, (ii) long chain linear or branched alkyl (including methyl), aliphatic or aromatic groups having 1 to 30 carbon atoms (such groups can also include hydroxylated groups); (iii) aralkyl groups, which are benzyl and substituted benzyl moieties, including such groups having fused ring moieties having linear chains or branches of 1 to 30 carbon atoms; (iv) aryl groups such as phenyl and substituted phenyl including fused ring aromatic substituents; (v) beta, gamma unsaturated groups having six or less carbon atoms or hydroxyalkyl groups having 2 to 6 carbon atoms; and (vi) hydrogen and M is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride, methylsulfate, acetate, iodide and bromide. The organophilic clay is used in a non-aqueous fluid system such as paints, inks, and coatings to provide rheological properties.

A liquid, pourable 100% active rheological additive especially useful for thickening organic compositions which in one aspect comprises an active hydrogen containing compound such as a polyol, one or more polycarboxylic acids or isocynanates, and a functional chain ending unit. The additive, which exists in a pourable, pumpable form at up to a 100% as a rheologically active composition, exhibits excellent thickening efficiency for systems including inks, epoxies, polyesters, paints, greases and other systems, including ease of dispersibility, without adversely affecting gloss. The additive may operate by both an associative and a reaction mechanism to provide rheological viscosity properties to such systems, and is also similarly useful for aqueous systems.

A composition of matter useful as a rheological additive for aqueous compositions comprising the reaction product of (a) about 15 to 80 percent by weight of one or more C₃-C₈ α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers; (b) about 15 to 85 percent by weight of one or more copolymerizable vinyl non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers; and (c) about 0.5 to 25 percent by weight of one or more vinyl monomers containing an aralkyl substituted phenol hydrophobe. The compositions are particularly useful in paints, especially latex and other water-miscible paints, and other coating compositions.

The present invention relates to a thickener composition comprising clay deposits and modified cellulose. It has now been discovered that a combination of a clay deposit and a modified cellulosic material provides thickening in water-based systems and particularly, in joint compound formulations. The composition shows a surprising thickening effect when added to water-based systems which would not be expected from the performance of these compounds individually as thickeners.

A process for treating wastepaper to remove oily waste and inorganic components, which comprises: (a) forming an organoclay treating composition in a wastepaper aqueous system; (b) contacting the wastepaper aqueous system with an amount of the organoclay effective to remove from the wastepaper oily waste and inorganic components; and (c) recovering paper pulp from the aqueous system. The process is effective in wastepaper treatment systems using both air flotation removal as well as systems utilizing water-washing processes.

A moisture curable composition comprised of a moisture curable base and a curing agent which does not contain molecular water but which produces water upon activation so as to cure the curable base. The composition exhibits improved stability and shelf life and can be formulated so that curing of the composition can be controlled substantially independently of ambient conditions.
