Rotation brings the flap tucker's longitudinal edge (12) in contact with the flap along a majority of the flap's length. Continued rotation plows the majority of the length of the flap simultaneously, thereby preventing the flap from misaligning on the carton when the flap is closed. The outside surface of the rotating flap tucker runs against the closed flap of the advancing carton, preferably along the carton's center line.

A conveyor tensioning assembly (11) for an article conveyor (10) is mounted to the frame (12) of the article conveyor, and connected to a take-up sproket (22). The conveyor tensioning assembly (11) includes a movable rack (60) that is engaged and moved by an advancing gear (78) of an advancing and holding assembly (70) in a first direction, causing the take-up sprocket (22) of the article conveyor to be urged outwardly against the conveyor chain (24) of the article conveyor so as to take-up any slack existing within the conveyor chain and place the conveyor chain (24) under tension. Once the conveyor chain has been tensioned, the rack (60) is engaged by a holding gear (83) mounted on a one-way clutch (86), which prevents the holding gear (83) from rotating in a counter-clockwise direction. The holding gear (83) retards in any rearward movement of the rack (60) so as to resist slippage and/or backlash of the rack to prevent the chain from losing tension and slack being formed therein to maintain the conveyor chain under a substantially constant tension.

A hold-down element (40) for a rotary feeder has a curved elongated member for continuously contacting an article during rotation of a rotary head (20). The curvature of the hold-down element is selected so that the distance from the elongated member to the rotary head increases from the point of initial contact to the final contact point on the elongated member. The hold-down element preferably maintains contact for at least 20° of rotation of the rotary head, and thus maintains contact with the article for an extended period of time. The hold-down element is attached to a vacuum shaft (48) on the rotary head, and is prevented from rotating relative to the vacuum shaft by a keyway (43) on the hold-down element and a key on the vacuum shaft. The hold-down element, however, is permitted to travel transversely along a longitudinal axis of the vacuum shaft in order to accommodate different shaped articles.

The side wall of the carton blank is simultaneously moved toward the bottles by a top guide (90) and a bottom guide (91).

Spaced arcuate score lines (66, 70) in the bottom panel cause the intervening segments (68) of the bottom panel to buttress the inner edge.

The bottom panel is formed from an inner flap (20) to which article retainer flaps (28) are hinged and an outer flap (22) to which a locking tab (40) is hinged. The retainer flaps are pivoted into the the interior of the carrier by the locking tabs (40) and include foldable side extensions (56) which engage the bottom portions of adjacent spaced articles. A slit or opening (58) between the retaining flaps permits entry of a locking tab (40). A projection (46) on the locking tabs engaging the retainer flaps adjacent an edge (66) thereof prevents withdrawal of the locking tabs from their activated positions.
