An apparatus for reducing and crushing coarse material comprises at least two rollers (3,4) in side-by-side substantially parallel relation which can be driven such that material supplied from above is discharged downwards between the rollers. Provided on the rollers are ribs which effect a reduction and crushing of the material supplied. The ribs of a first one of these rollers (3) are formed by two screw threads (8,9) having opposite leads for conveying material that is fed substantially centrally above the rollers laterally outwards in either direction, while the ribs of the second one (4) of these rollers are formed by oval disks (10) which are obliquely provided around the roller and which, when the roller is driven, perform a reciprocating movement, viewed in axial direction, causing a shearing and clearing movement between the oval disks (10) and the screw threads (8,9).

A composting apparatus for converting compost material in a hall is provided with a conveying system having an upwardly extending conveyor belt which, at or adjacent the bottom end thereof, comprises at least one digging wheel. This digging wheel has a wheel body which is open on one side and comprises, along the circumferential side thereof, digging elements which are open in the direction of rotation of the digging wheel. These digging elements are also of open design on the side facing the conveyor belt. Via an opening on the inside of each of the digging elements and via the open side of the wheel body of the digging wheel, the excavated compost material is laterally moved onto the conveyor belt and, by the use of this conveyor belt, discharged in order to be deposited elsewhere in the hall.

Eine Vorrichtung zum Zerkleinern und Zermahlen von grobem Material ist mit einem Rotor (3) mit einer Anzahl nebeneinander angeordneter, im wesentlichen ringsum laufender Rippen (10) und mit über dessen Oberfläche verteilt angeordneten Schlitzen (11), in denen Werkzeughalter (14) lösbar angeordnet sind, versehen. Auf diesen Werkzeughaltern (14) sind in Drehrichtung des Rotors wirksame Werkzeuge (13) befestigt. Die Werkzeuge (13) weisen eine Schnittfläche auf, die rechtwinklig begrenzt ist. Diese rechtwinklig begrenzten Schnittflächen und das durch die Rippen (10) gebildete Profil arbeiten mit einem mit Zähnen (25) versehenen Gegenmesser (4) zusammen, an dem entlang der Rotor drehen kann. Das Profil der Zähne und der Rippen ist derart, daß zwischen den Rippen und dem Gegenmesser ein Spalt einer mindestens über einen Teil der Länge des Rotors variierenden Größe vorhanden ist.
