Abstract:
Disclosed are aqueous carpet-coating compositions suitable for use as binders or adhesives in carpet products. Such compositions, prior to being applied to carpet substrates and cured, comprise: A) a selected type of vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) copolymer dispersion which has been stabilized with emulsifiers and a cellulose ether-based protective colloid, and B) at least one carbon black based filler in the form of a dispersion/slurry with a solids content between 20 and 70%. These coating compositions exhibit especially desirable initial viscosity and viscosity stability characteristics. Carpet products which utilize such coating compositions to provide binder and/or adhesive layer within the carpet are also disclosed. Such carpet products can have desirable odor-controlling and odor-absorbing properties.
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to carpet and method of making it. In one aspect, the carpet includes (a) a primary backing which has a face and a back surface, (b) a plurality of fibers attached to the primary backing and extending from the face of the primary backing and exposed at the back surface of the primary backing, (c) an adhesive backing, (d) an optional secondary backing adjacent to the adhesive backing, (e) at least one homogeneously branched linear ethylene polymer. The method includes extrusion coating at least one homogeneously branched linear ethylene polymer onto the back surface of a primary backing to provide an adhesive backing. The method can include additional steps or procedures, either separately or in various combinations. Additional steps and procedures include preheating the primary backing prior the extrusion step, multilayer adhesive backings, washing or scouring the primary backing prior the extrusion step, and utilizing adhesive polymeric additives, high heat content fillers, blowing agents and/or implosion agents. The constructions and methods described herein are particularly suited for making carpet tile.
Abstract:
A flat structure contains a foil-like material (8) sewn together with a layer (7) made of fibrous material. At least one layer of agglomerated foil-like material (8) forms a core layer (6) sewn between the covering layer (7) and the support layer (5).
Abstract:
A fabric, useful as a primary carpet backing, woven in both the warp and weft directions from filmy elements in the form of longitudinally-oriented, splittable ribbons formed from a blend of a major amount of polyester and a minor amount of a polyolefin. The ribbons split longitudinally when punctured by a tufting needle, thus providing for a more secure grip on the tufted carpet yarn than that given by conventional polyester backings. The use of polyester as a principal component overcomes certain drawbacks of polypropylene backings. Alternative processes for making these fabrics, each involving a heat-treating step at a temperature of at least 150°F (66°C) for a sufficient period of time to render the ribbons splittable, are also disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to a method for manufacturing a laminated textile product comprising providing a first intermediate product comprising a primary backing having a front surface and a back surface, and yarns stitched into the primary backing, the yarns extending from the front surface of the backing material, feeding the intermediate product along a body having a heated surface, the back surface being pressed against the said heated surface, to at least partly melt the yarns present in the intermediate product to bond the yarns to the backing, wherein the part of the back surface that is pressed against the heated surface has a relative speed with respect to the heated surface, so as to provide a second intermediate product having a calendered back surface, providing a dimensionally stable carrier sheet or secondary backing, and connecting the second intermediate product to the carrier sheet by providing a hot melt adhesive between the calendered surface and the sheet, and pressing the sheet to the second intermediate product to form the textile product.

Abstract:
Electrically conductive tape yarns (1, 9) of two or more layers (3, 5, 11, 13, 15) comprising thermoplastic polymer resin and electrically conductive particles, a process for making such tapes and fabrics (17) comprising such tape yarns are disclosed.
Abstract:
A fabric backing which may be used in manufacturing tufted carpets, which is comprised of woven silica fibres impregnated with a stabilising amount of acrylic resin which can be penetrated by needles during tufting and retain its dimensional stability.
