The apparatus makes use of a pair of rotating combs (11-14), the discs of the second comb being interposed between the discs of the first comb and positioned at the top between fixed guide plates (17). The discs of the first comb intercept the streams of closed capsules, from which any covers not provided with shells have already been removed. The capsules are inserted by their shells between the discs of the first comb and remain suspended on said discs by their covers (C1). Only capsule shells and any crushed capsules fall through the discs of the first comb. The capsules conveyed by the first rotating comb arrive on the discs of the second comb, generally with their covers at the front. The second comb transfers the capsules to the longitudinal guide channels (107') of a short vibrating table (7'), which in the initial part of each channel is provided with a longitudinal aperture (19) which allows the capsule shell to pass through but holds the capsule covers, which in this way arrive in a vertical position at a discharge hole (20). Any capsules carrying two covers pass over said hole (20) and are discharged into the hopper for rejects.

A separator for material which includes components of different specific gravities and sizes, includes a series of spaced, parallel shafts (10) disposed in essentially the same plane, which may be tilted upwardly. A series of non-circular discs, (11, 12) such as elliptical, three lobed, etc., are mounted on each shaft (10) and interspaced with the discs on adjacent shafts. A pipe (16), on which the discs (10) are mounted, or a spacer (35) mounted on the shaft ( 10) provides circular surfaces between the discs (11), (12) which clear the projections of the discs of adjacent shafts but when the disc surfaces between the projections come opposite the pipe (16) or spacer (35) cause holes or spaces to be produced, through which material may fall, if sufficiently small. As the discs rotate, they not only cause the holes to open and close, but also propel the material both upwardly and forwardly. The discs (11, 12) may be mounted on a shaft (10) in a spiral relation, so that not only is the material pushed upwardly and forwardly, but also laterally. Several sets of discs (11, 12) may be used, with the discharge end of one set being above the receiving end of the next set, so that the material will tend to be turned over as it falls from one set to the next. A paddle may be used to enhance the turning, while the paddle may be rotated at a sufficient speed to break glass bottles or the like. The holes produced by the rotating discs may increase in size from one set to the next.

Process and plant for sorting grain or seed material such as coffee beans. The main problem when sorting such materials, lies in the shape of the grains which is far from being round, resulting in the grains going through the meshes of a sieve also depending on their position relative to the sieve. During the first stage of the process disclosed, foreign materials are removed from the material to be sorted which is then sorted in a moving sieve (15, 16) preferably linear. The vibrating motion, in relation with barrier baffle, provides a spreading of the material on the surface of the sieve and forces the grain to move along the longitudinal axis thereof. Thus, the probability for the grains to traverse the meshes of the sieve by their smaller cross section is increased. The efficiency of the screening operation is thereby increased. The installation comprises on the top of sieve (15, 16) barrier baffles (21) transversal to the motion of the material, and preferably made of elastic material such as rigid rubber.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein neues Verfahren und eine neue Vorrichtung zum Klassieren von Korngut oder ' Saatgut, wie Hülsenfrüchten, Kaffeebohnen o. ä. Das Hauptproblem bei der Klassierung solcher Güter liegt darin, daß die einzelnen Körner stark von der runden Form abweichen und je nach der momentanen Lage des Einzelkornes relativ zur unter ihm liegenden Sieböffnung dieses durch die Öffnung hindurchfallen kann oder nicht. Bei dem neuen Verfahren wird nun das Klassiergut in einer ersten Stufe von Fremdstoffen gereinigt und durch eine (vorzugsweise linear) bewegte Siebfläche (15, 16) klassiert. Durch die Vibrationsbewegung in Verbindung mit den Staustufen wird eine starke Umschichtung der Körner auf der Siebfläche erzielt und diesen eine Bewegung um die eigene Achse aufgezwungen. Hierdurch wird die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Ausrichtens der Körner derart, daß sie über ihre kleinste Querschnittsfläche durch die Sieböffnungen durchfallen können, und dadurch auch die Ausbeute des Verfahrens verbessert. Bei der neuen Vorrichtung werden oberhalb des Siebes (15, 16) und quer zur Sieblängsrichtung Stauglieder (21), vorzugsweise aus elastischem, jedoch steifem Gummi, angeordnet.

The present invention includes devices and methods for handling and sorting paper. Devices for accelerating and spreading paper from a paper input (14) to a sensor (23) are disclosed. Operably thin layers of paper are passed through a sensor at cost effective feed rates. One embodiment of the invention includes a spreader (24) positioned to receive paper (12) from the input and an inclined feed section (18) downstream of the spreader. The inclined feed section includes first and second inclined conveyors (50, 52) to further accelerate and spread the paper. A feed accelerator (84) is operably positioned to receive paper from the second inclined conveyor. The feed accelerator further accelerates and separates the paper. The feed accelerator feeds the paper to the sensor which is operably connected to an ejector (92) downstream of the sensor. Targeted paper is ejected from the paper stream and product paper continues downstream to a product conveyor (102).
