The present invention relates to a sorter (1) and a method for sorting wood pieces and for guiding them to a conveyor means (4). This type of sorter comprises a lower frame (2), a receiving deck (6) for wood pieces, and a feeder (7) for detaching a wood piece from the receiving deck. Said feeder comprises control means (8) for supporting the wood piece (5, 51, 52) during movement directed to it and transferring it substantially vertically from the receiving deck. In that case the control means is traversed by at least two bearers (10) controlled by an actuator (11) for producing the vertical movement of the wood piece. The bearers are arranged to project from an outer surface of the control means (8) by an amount of projection that is adjustable during lifting. The feeder (7) further comprises measuring means (12) for detecting a wood piece of the largest cross-sectional diameter on the bearers and for controlling the projection of the bearers to a position corresponding to this diameter.

The invention relates to a method for measuring the volume or the end face diameter of a tree trunk and for quality control. The volume is measured in a prior known manner with laser gauges capable of measuring top and butt diameters as well as a length, which are used for calculating a volume. For quality control, the end face of a tree trunk is illuminated with red light and blue light, and light coming from the end face of the tree trunk is received by a color matrix camera (5). From the red/blue ratio in the camera's (5) signals is identified the proportion of rot or other defect in the end face of a tree trunk. The camera signals can be used for calculating the end face diameters of tree trunks. The method is integrated with a pulpwood pretreatment process upstream of debarking.

By the device described, it is possible to reduce the length of the conveyor considerably, and also reduce the number of packing stations.

Die Erfindung betrifft eine Anlage zur Bestimmung der Holzgüte von Schnitthölzern, in der ein Scanner 5 mit vierseitiger Kameraerfassung zur Abtastung der vier Längsseiten der Schnitthölzer 2 auf an deren Oberflächen sichtbare Fehler und zur Messung der Längen, Breiten und Höhen der Schnitthölzer 2 und eine Wiegestation 6 für die Schnitthölzer angeordnet sind, deren Ausgänge zur Auswertung der Scannerbilder und zur Ermittlung der Rohdichte der Schnitthölzer mit einem Rechner verbunden sind. Auch enthält die Anlage eine Station 9 mit einem auf die Schnitthölzer 2 einwirkenden mechanischen Impulsgeber und einem mit dem Rechner verbundenen Meßwandler zur Aufnahme der in den Schnitthölzern 2 durch den Impulsgeber angeregten Schwingungen.
