The present invention provides a method of recovering nitrile rubber from water-containing crumbs comprising crumb-like nitrile rubber using an extruder in which a screw is disposed inside a barrel so as to be capable of being rotationally driven. The barrel is formed with at least a washing zone. The method comprises supplying washing water to the washing zone at a water pressure of 0.2 MPa or higher while mixing the crumb-like nitrile rubber and the supplied washing water in the washing zone, thereby washing the crumb-like nitrile rubber.

A process for the continuous coagulation and drying of rubber latex includes feeding the latex onto an endless conveyor belt (8) which feeds the latex through a coagulator (10). A combination of microwave energy and hot air raises the temperature of the latex causing it to coagulate in a coagulation time of less than five minutes. The coagulated rubber from the coagulator (10) is fed onto a conveyor belt (14) of a stretch unit (12) which stretches the rubber by increasing its speed of travel. The stretched rubber is then conveyed onto the upper belt (18) of a drying unit (16). The drying rubber is passed from the upper belt (18) onto an intermediate belt (20) and then on to a lower belt (22) before leaving the drying unit (16). A combination of microwave energy and hot air in the drying unit (16) is used to dry the rubber to a moisture content of less than 1.5%.

The present invention is a method for dewatering a wet, particulate polymer mass. The method of the present invention includes several steps, one of which is adding a surface active macromolecule to a wet, particulate polymer mass. The polymer mass is thereafter subjected to a mechanical dewatering procedure. Typically, these mechanical dewatering procedures include filtration, centrifugation, coagulation, and thermal drying. The surface active macromolecules of the present invention have been useful in reducing the moisture content of various wet, particulate polymer masses. The surface active macromolecules of the present invention alter the water function characteristics of the wet, particulate polymer mass, and thereby facilitate the dewatering of the polymer mass. The compounds of the present invention are effective at low concentrations of from about 7.5 to 300 ppm.
