A compressor starting torque converter method and apparatus for high power rotating equipment strings includes a compressor starting torque converter (CSTC) (16) and gearing to make the input and output speed conform to the speed and power requirements of the at least one compressor (4) at the end of the string. The string also includes a prime mover (10), either a motor or gas turbine with a starter motor. The CSTC is driven by a prime mover that has been geared down (via 18) to an appropriate speed for efficient power transfer, followed by a gear increasing unit (20) to allow the output of the CSTC to be increased to conform to the necessary requirements of a high speed compressor. The gearing can be two separate units with their own housings, or incorporated in a single housing with the CSTC. The CSTC may be a CSTC used in pressurized starts high compressor load strings for LNG refrigeration service.

A hydrostatic-mechanical power splitting transmission has a hydrostatic unit (6) arranged in a housing (7) of the transmission. The hydrostatic unit (6) is supported from the housing (7) on a first supporting element (8) which extends transversely relative to a driving shaft (2) and a driven shaft (3) of the transmission and on a second supporting element (9). The first supporting element (8) is designed to support the weight and the reaction torque of said hydrostatic unit (6) on the housing (7) of the transmission close to a vertical plane which contains the centre of gravity (S) of the units and the second supporting element (9) does not support reaction torque and is only designed to support a lower portion of the weight of said hydrostatic unit (6), than the portion of the weight which is supported by said first supporting element (8). The hydrostatic unit (6) is also designed to be supplied with hydraulic oil and/or lubricating oil via the second supporting element (9).

A main flow way is disposed in each control section. At least four switch members of a switch assembly are respectively assembled and disposed in the main flow ways. A circumference of each main flow way is in communication with multiple bypasses. The main flow ways of each two of the control sections are respectively in communication with a fluid output passage and a fluid input passage of a power device. The load flow ways are in communication with two ends of a load. At least some of the bypasses of each control section are in communication with each other. A lower flow guide window is disposed on each switch member in indirect communication with each main flow way. When each switch member is operated under external force, the lower flow guide window is switchable between the respective bypasses to selectively communicate with the bypasses so that various fluid transfer paths are controlled to make one or both of two different power devices drive the load.

An improved split power path transmission with a combiner is disclosed which comprises an input power splitter that splits input power between at least one fixed-ratio mechanical power path and at least one variable-ratio power path. The outputs of the fixed-ratio and variable-ratio power paths are combined by coupling their outputs to a combiner. The transmission also comprises a multi-speed drive assembly comprising at least two selectable gear ratios. The transmission can be made more compact by incorporating the multi-speed drive assembly between the input and output of the variable-ratio power path.
