Dabei umfasst die Vorrichtung (1, 1', 1") einen zweiten Musterträger (18, 18') mit mindestens einer Musterstelle (180) vorgesehen, wobei die Musterträger (11, 11', 18, 18') jeweils mit dem drehbaren Bauteil (20, 21) verbindbar oder verbunden sind, sodass sie derart gemeinsam damit um eine Rotationsachse (R) bezüglich dem Empfänger (10, 10') rotierbar sind, dass die Musterstelle (110) des ersten Musterträgers (11, 11') in Deckung mit der Musterstelle (180) des zweiten Musterträgers (18, 18') liegt, und wobei der Empfänger (10, 10') ausgebildet und eingerichtet ist, zu erfassen, ob die Musterstellen (110, 180) in Deckung liegen oder nicht. An optical scale, a method for manufacturing an optical scale, and an optical encoder less affected by fluctuations in the amount of detected light and with an improved resolution are provided. The optical scale is an optical scale through which or on which light source light from a light source is passed or reflected. The optical scale includes a plurality of wires provided thereon so that the plurality of wires do not intersect each other and each of the tangential directions of the respective wires changes continuously. The optical encoder includes the optical scale, a light source, an optical sensor, and a computing unit. The optical sensor includes a first polarizing layer that splits incident light that is light source light from the light source passed through or reflected on the optical scale and being incident on the first polarizing layer to a first polarization direction, a second polarizing layer that splits the incident light to a second polarization direction, a first photoreceiver that receives first polarized light split by the first polarizing layer, and a second photoreceiver that receives second polarized light split by the second polarizing layer. The computing unit computes a relative movement of the optical scale with respect to the optical sensor from the light intensities of the first polarized light and of the second polarized light.

A torque transducer comprising a rotating shaft having first and second torque input members (1a, 1b) connected by a torsionally compliant coupling (2) thereby enabling angular deflection of the torque input members relative to each other as a function of the magnitude of the torque in the shaft. The transducer having an EMR source (5, 6) and an array or EMR sensitive detectors (7, 8). Each of the torque input members having a grating zone (101, 102) with alternating regions of high and low transmissibility to the EMR. The grating zone resides in the transmission path (90, 91) communicating EMR from the source to the array. A pattern is produced by incident EMR on the array resulting from the alternating regions of high and low transmissibility of the grating zones residing in the transmission path to the array. The pattern on the array is processed to derive the relative angular deflection of the torque members and provide a measure of the magnitude of the torque in the shaft.

A torque sensor, or relative angular movement sensor, capable of measuring the angular displacement of a component in a power-assisted steering system, comprises an input member (5) coupled to one end of a torsion bar (4), an output member (2) coupled to another end of the torsion bar, LED light sources (20), a pair of photodetector units (28a,28b) adapted to receive light from the LED light sources, and signal processing means adapted to receive output signals (A1,A2,B1,B2) from the photodetector units, the output signals of the photodetector units being dependent upon the light signals which they receive, and wherein the signal processing means is adapted to produce a modified output signal (Q new ) which closely matches and is representative of the angular position of a chosen portion of the torsion bar. The signal processing comprises various stages in which the output signals from the photodetector units are processed to generate possible estimates of the instantaneous position of the chosen portion of the torsion bar and the best estimate (P̂) is calculated and processed to provide a complete position estimate representing the angular position of the chosen portion relative to an arbitrarily chosen zero position.
