    Abstract: A package that has both child-resistant and non-child-resistant modes of operation. A container has an end with an open mouth surrounded by a container wall with a central axis and at least one first lock element extending radially outwardly from the wall. A closure includes an annular base wall having inner and outer peripheral edges. A cylindrical skirt extends from the outer peripheral edge of the base wall, and at least one second lock element is disposed on the skirt. A projection extends axially from the inner peripheral edge of the base wall in a direction opposite from the skirt. The projection has an annular sidewall spaced radially inwardly from the outer peripheral edge of the skirt. The closure is adapted to be secured to the container in a child-resistant mode of operation with the second lock element on the skirt releasably engaged with the first lock element on the container wall, and with the inner peripheral edge of the base wall in resilient engagement with the outer surface of the container wall to bias the lock elements in engagement with each other and to seal the package. The closure is adapted to be inverted and secured to the container in a non-child-resistant mode of operation with the annular sidewall of the projection received in plug-sealing engagement within the container mouth.

    Abstract: A cut and pierce closure molded from a rigid plastic material for a container whose open mouth is normally sealed by a thin membrane applied to a rim of the container. The closure is removably applied to the container in a closing orientation by interengaging helical threads on the exterior of a neck of the container and an annular skirt of the closure. To dispense the contents of the container, the closure is removed and reapplied in an inverted orientation, a flange extension of the closure skirt surrounding the rim of the container and serving to center the closure in its inverted orientation on the container. A top panel of the closure is provided with a double-ended arcuate shoulder that engages the membrane when the closure is in its inverted orientation on the container to maintain tension in the portion of the membrane in engagement with the shoulder. The arcuate shoulder also serves, in combination with the flange extension, to trap the rim of the container therebetween. A sharp cutting element projects axially from the shoulder at a location between its ends and functions to pierce the membrane when the closure is reapplied, in its inverted orientation, to the container. When the closure is rotated on the container in the inverted orientation, the cutting element will cut the membrane along an arc of less than 360° even if the closure is rotated 360° or more, to thereby permit dispensing of the contents of the container after removal of the closure from the container while ensuring that the severed membrane remains affixed to the rim of the container without dropping into the contents of the container.

    Abstract: A cut and pierce closure molded from a rigid plastic material for a container whose open mouth is normally sealed by a thin membrane applied to a rim of the container. The closure is removably applied to the container in a closing orientation by interengaging helical threads on the exterior of a neck of the container and an annular skirt of the closure. To dispense the contents of the container, the closure is removed and reapplied in an inverted orientation, a flange extension of the closure skirt surrounding the rim of the container and serving to center the closure in its inverted orientation on the container. A top panel of the closure is provided with a double-ended arcuate shoulder that engages the membrane when the closure is in its inverted orientation on the container to maintain tension in the portion of the membrane in engagement with the shoulder. The arcuate shoulder also serves, in combination with the flange extension, to trap the rim of the container therebetween. A sharp cutting element projects axially from the shoulder at a location between its ends and functions to pierce the membrane when the closure is reapplied, in its inverted orientation, to the container. When the closure is rotated on the container in the inverted orientation, the cutting element will cut the membrane along an arc of less than 360.degree. even if the closure is rotated 360.degree. or more, to thereby permit dispensing of the contents of the container after removal of the closure from the container while ensuring that the severed membrane remains affixed to the rim of the container without dropping into the contents of the container.

    Abstract: A pill dispensing package that includes a circular base having a pill dispensing opening adjacent to its periphery. A circular package disk has a peripheral array of frangible elements containing pills to be dispensed disposed for selective alignment with the base dispensing opening, and indicia for indicating dosage periodicity. A circular cover overlies the package disk, and is moveably secured to the base. The cover has a window for observing the periodicity indicia on the package disk, and a button for manual urging against the package disk to dispense a pill through the base opening from the frangible element aligned with the opening. The cover is resiliently urged axially away from the base and circumferentially with respect to the base, and is constructed to permit limited axial and circumferential movement with respect to the base. When the cover is moved toward the base, the cover engages the package disk for rotating the disk with respect to the base and thereby advance the package disk for the next pill dispensement. Pill dispensement requires both axial and circumferential motion of the cover with respect to the base, as well as depression of the button on the cover, a series of movements that resists use by a child.

    Abstract: A one-piece molded closure of plastic which threads onto a container with a fairly specific exterior configuration and provides a combination such that when the closure is unthreaded, a tamper-indicating ring becomes separated from the lower end of the closure skirt. The indicating ring or band is joined to the closure by frangible bridges and a flexible stop ring is formed within the band and extends inwardly and upwardly when the closure is applied to a container finish. The container finish has a first radial bead and an inwardly tapering side wall surface therebeneath which leads to an abrupt, inwardly extending ledge. The flexible stop ring rests on the tapered surface, when the closure is applied. After closure removal, the stop ring and band drops below the ledge indicating that the closure has been removed.

    Abstract: A tamper indicating package comprising a one-piece molded closure of plastic which threads onto a container such that when the closure is unthreaded, a tamper-indicating ring becomes separated from the lower end of the closure skirt. The indicating ring or band is joined to the closure along a weakened frangible line and a flexible stop ring is formed within the band and extends inwardly and upwardly when the closure is applied to a container finish. The container finish has a first radial bead, a second radial bead spaced axially below the first bead, and an intermediate tapered or concave surface between the first radial bead and second radial bead. A further surface extends from the second bead axially downwardly and radially inwardly and the flexible end of the stop ring rests on this surface between the two beads, when the closure is applied. When the closure is unthreaded to remove it, the free end of the stop ring passes over the second bead into the recess formed by the surface between the two beads and the frangible portion is broken leaving the ring and band in this position. Upon subsequent reapplication of the closure, the closure skirt engages the band causing the band to pass over the second bead on the finish so that the band falls away but remains on the container to indicate that the band has been severed.

    Abstract: A child-resistant closure and container package includes a container having an open end surrounded by a cylindrical wall with a central axis, a plurality of circumferentially spaced projections extending radially outwardly from an outer surface of the wall adjacent to the open end, notches on undersides of the projections, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced flexible resilient spring elements extending radially outwardly from the outer surface of the cylindrical wall and angularly disposed between the projections. A closure includes a base wall, a cylindrical skirt extending from the base wall to an axial edge spaced from the base wall, a plurality of circumferentially spaced lugs extending radially inwardly from the skirt, and a circumferentially continuous annular wall extending axially from the base wall coaxially with and spaced radially inwardly from the skirt. The axial edge of the skirt is adapted for axial edge abutment with the spring elements on the container to urge the lugs axially into the notches, with the annular wall being in internal plug-sealing engagement with the open end of the container. Removal of the closure requires axial movement of the closure against the spring elements and rotation of the closure to move the lugs out of the notches and clear the projections.

    Abstract: A child-resistant package includes a container having an end with an open mouth surrounded by a container wall having a central axis. An external ledge extends around the container wall at a position spaced from the open mouth. The ledge has an axially facing surface that adjoins a radially outwardly facing surface of the container wall, and closure securement structure on the ledge including at least one pocket. A closure includes a base wall, a peripheral skirt coupled to the base wall, at least one internal lug on the skirt for receipt in the at least one pocket on the container, and an annular wall that extends from the base wall for plug-sealing receipt within the container mouth when the skirt is received over the end of the container. At least one spring element extends from the base wall of the closure adjacent to the skirt radially inwardly and axially within the skirt. The spring element is adapted to engage the axially facing surface of the ledge and to slide radially inwardly along the ledge surface as the closure lug is moved into the pocket on the container to bias the lug into the pocket. The radially outwardly facing surface of the container wall adjacent to the ledge axially facing surface functions as a stop to prevent over-compression of the spring element, and to prevent engagement of the spring element with the annular wall on the closure and thereby affect the plug seal function of the annular wall.
