Abstract: 1,144,058. Removing oil from water. AJEM LABORATORIES Inc. 29 April, 1966 [30 April, 1965; 11 June, 1965], No. 19069/66. Heading C1C. [Also in Divisions B2 and C5] Oil (non polar) is separated from water (polar) used for example in industrial lubricating operations by passing through the mixture a rotor in the form of a solid surface of revolution which has a surface which preferentially adsorbs the oil for it to be removed from the surface portion of the rotor not immersed in the mixture. The oil is adsorbed on roughened or grooved surfaces of rubber polytetrafluorethylene, polyethylene, neoprene, steel, iron, copper, aluminium, glass, acrylics. The rotor may be heated. A magnet may be incorporated in the rotor to remove magnetic particles. The oil may be removed by squeegee scrapers, squeeze type rollers or jets of air. Examples of rotors are given in Figs. 5-11 (not shown). The process may be reversed to adsorb the water on a hydrophilic rotor from a bath of oil.
