Abstract: Compositions for bonding plies at the heel end of a shoe comprise a polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, water and an organic solvent in which the polymer is soluble at room temperature and which dissolves at least 3% of its own weight of water. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl acetate emulsion and (I to III) methyl ethyl ketone, (IV) acetone, (V) ethyl acetate and (VI) methyl acetate; and methyl ethyl ketone and emulsions of copolymers of (VII) ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, (VIII) vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate, and (IX) butyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate.
