    Abstract: An optical circuit that has a first input waveguide, at least a first output waveguide and an optical path between the first input waveguide and the at least a first output waveguide. A first totally internally reflecting (TIR) waveguide switch lies on the optical path between the first input waveguide and the at least a first output waveguide. A wavelength selective filter is disposed on the optical path between the first input waveguide and the at least one output waveguide, the wavelength selective filter being transmissive for light in a first wavelength range and reflective for light in a second wavelength range.

    Abstract: An optical fiber ribbon cable is formed using thermally expandable core (TEC) fibers. Expanded optical cores are formed in sections of TEC fibers, so that each section of TEC fiber comprises a first region having an unexpanded core, a second region having an expanded core, and a tapered region between the first region and the second region. The respective sections are cleaved to length and formed into a ribbon. A hybrid optical fiber ribbon cable can be made by fusing single mode optical fibers of a single mode fiber ribbon cable with TEC fibers of a TEC fiber ribbon cable using a laser. The laser is also used to form tapered core regions in the TEC fibers to reduce coupling losses between the TEC fibers and the single mode fibers.

    Abstract: Integrated WDM mux/demux devices are disclosed. Some embodiments are directed to an in-line WDM mux/demux device formed with a substrate and a common port at a first side of the substrate and a plurality of separated wavelength ports at a second side of the substrate. The first side of the substrate is free of separated wavelength ports. Other embodiments are directed to a WDM mux/demux device in which a linear variable filter is disposed in the substrate for separating the signals in different channels. In other embodiments, the filter or filters are sandwiched between the edges of adjacent substrates, such that light propagating along a waveguide in one of the substrates is transmitted through the filter to a waveguide in the second substrate. The adjacent substrates may be mounted to a base substrate.
