摘要: A waveguide illuminator for illuminating a display panel includes an input waveguide, a waveguide splitter coupled to the input waveguide, and a waveguide array coupled to the waveguide splitter. The waveguide array includes an array of out-couplers out-coupling portions of the split light beam to form an array of out-coupled beam portions for illuminating a display panel. The out-coupled beam portions undergo optical interference and form a Talbot pattern of illumination correlated with pixel array of the display panel, enabling an optical throughput increase by centering individual Talbot peaks on the display panel pixels.

摘要: A folded-path optical component usable as an ocular lens in a near-eye display is disclosed. The folded-path optical component includes a cavity formed by a pair of spaced apart coaxial curved reflective polarizers, and a partial reflector in the cavity for splitting an impinging light beam to propagate along two optical paths ending at an exit pupil of the optical component. Each optical path includes a reflection from one of the reflective polarizers and a transmission through the other one of the reflective polarizers.

摘要: A display device with a transparent illuminator and an liquid crystal (LC) display panel is disclosed. The transparent illuminator includes a light source and a transparent lightguide, which may be based on a slab of transparent material with zigzag light propagation of the illuminating light in the slab and/or a transparent photonic integrated circuit with singlemode ridge waveguides for spreading the illuminating light in a plane parallel to the plane of LC display panel. The lightguide includes a plurality of grating out-couplers whose position is coordinated with positions of LC pixels for higher throughput. A reflective offset-to-angle optical element may be provided to form an image in angular domain through the LC panel and through the transparent illuminator, resulting in an overall compact and efficient display configuration.

摘要: A display assembly includes a primary display, a temporal display, and a tiled optical assembly (TOA). The TOA includes a central optic and a peripheral lens assembly. The central optic provides light from the primary display to the user. The peripheral lens assembly is positioned to provide light from the temporal display to the user. The peripheral lens assembly may be a single or multi-lens array. In some embodiments, the temporal display is a lower resolution than the primary display. In some embodiments, the primary display and the temporal display are in the same plane, and a fold mirror is used to provide light from the peripheral display to the peripheral optical element. The display assembly may be incorporated into an artificial reality head-mounted display.

摘要: A head-mounted display (HMD) includes a pancake lens block, an eye tracking system, and an electronic display. The electronic display is coated with a dichroic film that transmits visible light and reflects infrared light (IR). An IR emitter illuminates an eye of the user, and infrared light is reflected from an eye through the pancake lens block and is incident on the dichroic film. The reflected light undergoes multiple reflections before being captured by an image capturing element of the eye tracking system that is positioned at a periphery of HMD located off-axis relative to an optical axis of the pancake lens block. Moreover, each reflection results in a particular view of the eye that results in multiple views of the eye being received by the image capturing element.

摘要: A head mounted display (HMD) includes a display and a pancake lens block. The display with a circular polarizer, comprised of an initial linear polarizer and a first quarter-waveplate with polarizer transmission axis 45° from the waveplate fast axis, emits polarized light. The pancake lens includes a partial reflector, a second quarter-waveplate, and a beam splitting polarizer. The pancake lens receives polarized light from the display. Light propagating through the pancake lens undergoes multiple reflections and transmissions achieved by coordinating changes in polarization of light through these optical elements. To mitigate parasitic light from degrading image quality of the HMD, the fast axis orientation of the first quarter-waveplate is oriented 90° relative to the fast axis orientation of the second quarter-waveplate, and thus the transmission axis of the first polarizer is oriented 90° relative to the transmission axis of the beam splitting polarizer.

摘要: A waveguide illuminator includes adjacent linear and slab waveguide areas. An input light beam is guided in a linear waveguide, is split into a plurality of sub-beams to propagate in individual linear waveguides to a slab waveguide area and form an output light beam in the slab waveguide area. An array of out-couplers is disposed in the slab waveguide area. The array of out-couplers out-couples portions of the output light beam forms an array of out-coupled beam portions for illuminating a display panel. Locations of the array of out-couplers are coordinated with locations of individual pixels of the display panel, thereby improving efficiency of light utilization by the display panel.
