Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of homopolymers or copolymers of olefinic compounds contain 0,5 to 5,0% (calculated on the polymer) of at least one ester of a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms with an olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and/or at least one diester of a monohydric alcohol as aforesaid with an aliphatic olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. The unsaturated carboxylic acids may be crotonic, cinnamic, itaconic, fumaric or maleic acids. Specified esters are maleic acid dibutyl ester, cinnamic acid ethyl ester, crotonic acid propyl ester, and fumaric acid dibutyl ester. The homopolymer may be a polymer of a vinyl ester of an organic acid, a vinyl ether or an acrylic or methacrylic acid ester of a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such as vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, vinyl ethyl ether or vinyl isobutyl ether. The copolymers may be obtained from any two or more of the above monomers, or from one of these monomers and vinyl chloride, or maleic acid esters or fumaric acid esters of aliphatic saturated straight or branched chain monohydric alcohols containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms. Plasticizers such as tricresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, diphenyl cresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, dimethylglycol phthalate, dibutyl adipate, dihexyl adipate, dioctyl adipate, diethylhexyl sebacate, dibutyl or dihexyl sebacate, diethyl laurate, dibutyl laurate, phenoxy ethyl laurate, n-butyl stearate, and isobutyl stearate, and solvents such as hexylene glycol, methylisobutyl ketone or octyl alcohol may also be added. The aqueous dispersion may be used as an adhesive for joining materials such as polyvinyl chloride, regenerated cellulose, cellulose triacetate, superpolyamides, paper, cardboard, textile materials, plaster, concrete, wood, metals such as lacquered iron or aluminium, and stone; in webs, foils, and sheets to each other and also as a binder for organic fillers such as peat, sawdust, wood shavings, cork powder, textile fibres, waste textile fibres of natural material such as wool, cotton, coconut fibres, flax, bast, synthetic polyesters and polyamides; and inorganic fillers such as stone powder, mica powder, slag, glass powder, glass fibres, heavy spar, fluorspar, titanium dioxide, lithopone, iron oxides and chromium oxides.
