Abstract: An elevator system includes an elevator shaft, an elevator car and a counterweight being coupled and being arranged in the elevator shaft for movement in opposite directions, and a buffer device arranged in a shaft pit of the elevator shaft. The buffer device limits the travel path of the counterweight and includes a buffer and a lifting device, wherein in an idle position of the lifting device an overtravel of the elevator car in a shaft head of the elevator shaft is enabled. The lifting device can be activated to an active position to limit the travel path of the counterweight and, between a shaft ceiling of the elevator shaft and the elevator car, a minimum distance for maintenance by personnel can be ensured. The lifting device is arranged between the buffer and the counterweight.
